Tue 25 Jul 2017 Donna Chambers

End of term Tuesday 25th July 2017

So, this is my final blog!

Yesterday we had an amazing day.  It started with the dress rehearsal for the ‘Graduation 2017’.  The year 6 children shone in front of the whole school, but then they absolutely smashed it in their evening performance.  The singing was stunning and the dance moves were really ‘slick’.  I was incredibly proud of them all.  As always the graduation was very well attended, it was great to see so many of you.

Yesterday afternoon was movie afternoon for the 97+% attendance children.  It was really good and they all really enjoyed it.

This morning started with ‘Beauvale’s Got Talent’ and what an incredible event it was too!  11 superb acts made it through to the final and it was excellent.

This afternoon was my very own ‘Gold Book’ which was incredibly emotional.  I have been absolutely inundated with gifts and cards and feel very lucky indeed.  I will always hold very fond memories of my time here.

I will of course miss the children, staff and families here at Greasley Beauvale and I am delighted to be leaving it in such capable hands.

Have a great summer and I wish you all the very best.

    Week Ending 21st July 2017

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Archie – Year 3 – for incredible writing.

    Diary of the week:

I cannot believe that this is my final full week in school! So much to do and so many exciting things planned.  It started on Monday with the Beauvale’s Got Talent (BGT) auditions for the final next week!  I only popped in for a sneak preview, as I was in a meeting, but it looks like it will be a great show.  In the afternoon, we had a run through of the graduation ceremony for the year 6 children.  They are doing so well and again, I think it will be a super show.  On Monday evening, we had our final full governing body meeting.  It was a little emotional for me, to be involved in discussions about September.  I have every confidence that Mrs Bate will continue to take the school from strength to strength.

The governors’ awards were held on Tuesday morning, where each teachers nominated a child.  Some of the reason for the nominations were fabulous.  It was a super event and great to see so many parents there.  Tuesday afternoon saw the class swap and the ‘meet the teacher’ events ready for September.  I had a jolly good sing-a-long in the hall with the children, whilst parents had the chance to chat.  At the strategic meeting on Tuesday evening, we made decisions about the key issue for the school improvement plan for next year.  It is always one of my favourite meetings, where we take stock of where we are and plan for the future.

Parents’ Evening on Wednesday was another success.  The detailed reports meant that some of you didn’t feel the need to attend, which is absolutely fine.

Thursday saw the ‘Toddard party’ take control following their election at the beginning of June.  They did a great assembly and I tried to wind them up when they were on office duty, unfortunately, they recognised my voice!

The football match between the football team and the staff also took place on Thursday.  Some of the male teachers were getting a little competitive and they tried to leave the female staff out!  We were having none of that!  Despite a wet morning, the game went ahead.  The first ten minutes were quiet with the first section finishing nil nil.  The second section included 2 goals from the staff.  I was then put in goal and scored a fabulous home goal, making the score 2:1.  This gave the kids all the inspiration that they needed and the score line change to 2:2 then 3:2 finishing up with a fabulous draw at 3:3.  The rest of the school then invaded the pitch in a really magical moment!

The school choir did a lovely concert to parents at 4pm on Thursday evening, the end to a lovely day.

Today has been my party day – the children, staff, governors and my family have been very secretive, but what a lovely afternoon it was!  It was great to play the wedding march for Miss McKellar as we send her off to marry Mr Ryan Savage.  I am sure that you will join with me in wishing her all the very best.  The party was followed by Mrs Tantum’s retirement party, which was also great.  It really was lovely to see so many old friends.

I will write my final blog before I leave on Tuesday, but in the meantime, I wish you all a super weekend.

    Week Ending 14th July 2017

This week, the children have all been working SO hard doing a variety of different activities with different teachers. As a result, we haven’t had any Head Teacher’s Awards, but I can assure you that every single child has worked hard and there could have been many awards for children developing a variety of talents and skills. I am proud of each and every one of them.

    Diary of the week:

Blimey…what a fantastic week in school. A true reflection of life at Greasley Beauvale Primary and how exciting it can be to learn here.

On Monday, the children completed and viewed a showcase of their DT and geography work from the week before. There was a fantastic selection of models on view and the children in the hall were very proud of their creations. They talked about them with confidence and took many questions on board, which they were able to answer with ease and knowledge. The focus of last week was on landmarks from different continents and countries around the globe. We saw ‘the Life of Favelas’ in Brazil; The Shard, Louvre, Stonehenge and the Leaning Tower of Piza from Europe; Boomerangs and Ayers Rock in Australia; African huts; The Empire state building in America; Ross Ice Shelf and Mount Vinson in the Antarctica and a variety of famous buildings in Asia e.g. The Taj Mahal. Everyone had a truly fabulous week and the showcase on Monday really showed off the true artistic talent in school. Thank you SO much to Miss Atamaniuk and Miss Busby for organising such a great week for the staff and children and allowing the children to show a true love of learning.

Whilst the year 6 children have been away on their PGL residential, the rest of the school have been taking part in vocational week this week; a fun packed week to learn about life in the real world concerning careers and different jobs. The list was endless and the children experienced an array of different skills: nail art, fashion designing, firefighting, the emergency services, hairdressing, footballing, cricketing, singing and performing, designing as an architect, illustrating and teaching…the list goes on!

As part of vocational week, nearly 50 children have taken part in the first stages of BGT (Beauvale’s Got Talent!). Again, there was an array of talents shared from singing, gym, magic tricks and much more. The children have received their letter for the second stages of the auditions and these will take place on Monday 17th July. The final for the BGT final will take place on the last day of term (Tuesday 25th July at 9.30am). Letters for the finalists will be sent out Monday afternoon. What an exciting process of discovering talent from across school.

‘Parents’ afternoon’ was another success, where classes had parent visitors to talk about their jobs and careers paths. It was lovely to see so many of you and I understand that the children had lots of fun finding out about your interesting lives.

Whilst talking about head teacher posts, you will have now been told about my new role in September. I am delighted to have been appointed the new head teacher for the school in September, and I can’t thank you all enough for your support and kind words during the process. I have learnt so much from Mrs Chambers and I am in a very lucky position that I can continue to learn from her over the next week and a half before we depart for the summer. I can not thank her enough for her support during this transitional period of change.

Next week, we look forward to many exciting planned events: BGT auditions, Governor Award’s assembly, brass bands, staff and kids football matches and of course Mrs Chambers’ leaving party. Parents’ evening will also take place on Wednesday after school (3.25pm – 5.15pm). We look forward to seeing you if there is anything that you want to discuss regarding your child’s life in school this year.

After another busy week, I wish you all the best for the weekend.

    Warm regards,

    Mrs Michelle Bates

  • Year 6-PGL Update-13/7/17

    Thu 13 Jul 2017
Last full day PGL update - we're coming back very very soon!
Climbing was brilliant yesterday, and so many of the kids made it all the way to the top of the climbing wall and rang the bell at the top! Abseiling was fantastic too - the minimum number of jumps it took some of the children to get down the wall was two... TWO JUMPS! Amazing!
Tunnel Trail and Challenge Course provided ground level fun, with time challenges and zombie games aplenty!
The night was finished off with a top-notch disco; the music was banging, the dancing was superb and the photo props went down an absolute treat. We all loved it!
Today we have our last few activities, Survivor and Vertical Challenge. We have had such a memorable week and cannot wait to tell you all about it when we get back 😊
We will keep you updated with the time of our return later on.
    See you all soon!

  • Year 6-PGL Update 12/7/17

    Wed 12 Jul 2017

    Hi everyone!

We had another whirlwind of a day yesterday, and loved every minute!

The Giant Swing and Trapeze were the real thrill-seeking activities we carried out yesterday. The Giant Swing is exactly what it sounds like - you're harnessed in and pulled back up to 10 metres into the air, before being dropped and swinging back and forth like Tarzan through the jungle! It was incredible! We also mastered the Trapeze, and even though not all of the children managed to jump off the pole at the end, all children attempted the climb up it! They should be really proud of their efforts.

Rifle shooting and archery were brilliant too (not as adrenaline-filled, but just as entertaining!) and they gave us a chance to show off a different set of skills - target practice!

In the evening, we took part in Robot Wars, building armour for our 'robot' out of cardboard and then guiding them through a maze of water-filled cups during the showdown. Keep an eye out for some cracking pictures!

All of the children have impressed us today with their team work skills, especially when encouraging less confident members of their groups to take on some tricky and (at times!) scary activities - well done guys!

  • Year 6-PGL Update-11/7/17

    Tue 11 Jul 2017

    Hi everyone!

We had a fantastic day yesterday - it was so jam-packed that we didn't stop until bedtime at 9 o'clock!

All the children had a great day and took part in a range of activities including the zip wire, sensory trail, raft building, high ropes course and archery. Raft building seemed to be a highlight for everyone, with expert team-work and splashing skills on show. The High Ropes course proved a challenge for most (including Glenn!), whilst the Sensory Trail was a highlight for the staff!

The fun-filled day was ended in the evening with a life-size game of Cluedo, complete with maps, challenges, and a real life pirate... We loved it!

All children were so exhausted that they slept soundly last night, ready for another full day of activities 😊

    Diary of the week:

The curriculum focus this week has been ‘Design Technology’ and I hope you are all clearing plenty of space on the fireplace for when the children bring their models home!  The children have loved it this week, it has been a sea of boxes, glue and paint – I love it!

We had our Year 6 SATs results on Tuesday and they are really good.  The children have done so well and we are all so proud of them.  As well as children being able to celebrate their achievements, we use these results to inform the new School Improvement Plan for September. This is achieved by looking at areas where progress was not as good as in other areas and discussing what we can learn.

The selection process for the new head teacher has taken place this week.  The governors have set a variety of challenges in addition to the formal interview, to test all aspects of the skills needed for the role.  It has been a bit strange for me, being an ‘onlooker’.  At the point of writing this blog the final decision has not yet been announced.  Dr Louise Bramley, Chair of governors, will be in touch next week.

I am back in school on Sunday as we head off on our annual residential trip with the Year 6 children.  This year we are going to PGL, where we will be taking part in a multitude of activities.  I will be back in school later in the week, as I am swapping half way through with Miss McKellar.

I look forward to seeing you next week
