  • Cup Quarter Final Match, Greasley V Priory

    Wed 31 Jan 2018

Greasley Beauvale Primary School  V Priory Catholic Voluntary Academy.

On Monday 29th January, we played in the quarter-final of the cup against a very tough Priory team.  All players worked hard and played well in difficult conditions. It was a hard fought game and at the end of normal time, the score was level at 2-2.  The game went into extra time and after some very good play,  Greasley scored another 2 goals to win the match, 4-2, to take us through to the semi-final.

Man of the match was Jamie Caress who scored one of the vital goals in extra time.  Well done to all the players and parents for their support.

    Diary of the week:

Another busy week with Team GB. It all started very positively on Monday morning when we had a lovely visit from the Chair of the Rolleston & Mansell charity. This charity award child, within the local area, for receiving 100% attendance in the last academic year. In our school, Over 50 children were part of the award ceremony. A great way to start the week and a super link with the messages given out last week regarding attendance.

It is with heavy heart that I had to write to EYFS parents this week to inform them that Miss James, in early Years, has decided to leave the teaching profession to spend more time with her family and venture into the world of childminding. Miss James has spent many years at the school, as an outstanding Early Years practitioner, and we are all very sad to see her go. Due to Miss James’ working week, her final day in school will sadly be on Tuesday 13th February. For the remaining months of the school year, Mrs Lisa Clarke will then be stepping back into the classroom to job share in class 2 with Miss Baker. Miss James has touched the hearts of so many children over the years and I know that you will all be very sad to see Miss James leave (as are we). I hope that you will join us in thanking her for her devotion to your children over the years and wishing her a very successful future. Au revoir, Miss James, and the very best of luck!

Another fabulous week in school. Everyone is working hard and I can honestly say that getting back into the classroom twice a week to teach the year 6 boosters has been fabulous. I personally love seeing how hard the children are working and the drive and perseverance they are developing at a challenging time of their primary schooling career.

At the opposite end of the school, I have seen a similar picture in Early Years, where they are always creatively and imaginatively driven. This week, they were fishmongers as I walked visitors around, and we witnessed wibbly wobbly fish being examined and cut ready for selling and serving. Even Mr Wood, our Governor, got his apron strings tied, gloves on and got himself stuck in with the little ones.

Talking of visitors, I received the following email this week from someone, who I showed around school:

I just wanted to thank you again for taking the time to show me around your wonderful school. Although for the majority of the time the children were not in their classrooms, I still got a real feel for how much the staff care for the children they teach and some of the wonderful learning that takes place, which was evident through the vibrant classrooms and wonderful displays.

I feel like this every day, but it was so lovely to read such a positive email from someone who does not know the school well.

Today, I did a learning walk to gather information about the ways in which teachers are currently focussing on the ways they challenge and extend their children’s learning and experiences. There are some super ideas and we will continue to work on this area across school/

After another busy week! Have a fabulous weekend and enjoy the break from the school run with your families.

    Warm regards,

    Mrs Michelle Bates

    Diary of the week:

How is it Friday already again? What another busy week and such a productive time in school. This week, I have been showing many visitors around school and I have been very proud to take them into classrooms. The atmosphere has been hard-working as well as fun, creative and enjoyable. Colleagues visiting have commented on the behaviour of the children; their use of manners; the ability to talk to adults and their overall warmth and friendliness. One visitor actually commented on the positive ethos around school and that has made me very proud of everyone.

This week, we awarded many children across school for their 100% attendance last term. Each child was acknowledged in an assembly, presented with a certificate and had their name entered into a raffle for a £10 book token. I am pleased to say that Ollie in year one won the book token, and many children were very proud of their attendance certificates. I also spoke to the rest of the children about not worrying about their actual percentage, and said that if they did not get a certificate this time then they may well do next term. We also spoke about the fact that the end of year target was to get 97% or better and that there would be a bronze, silver and gold award. Because of this, one day here and there would not prevent their attendance from being acknowledged. The children were pleased to know that they had a chance of being congratulated in some way over the course of the academic year.

The table below shows how we will award the pin badges at the end of the school year:

Children achieving the following percentages will receive a special pin badge

    97% to 98.5% Attendance

    98.6% to 99.9% Attendance

    100% Attendance

    Bronze ‘Attendance Award’ pin badge

    Silver ‘Attendance Award’ pin badge

    Gold ‘100% Attendance’ pin badge

On Thursday evening, we had another staff meeting on developing our whole school vision. I took all the views to the meeting, which I had collated so far. I ensured that your views were represented in the meeting, and as a staff (along with a governor representative), we drew on the vocabulary extracted from all stakeholder consultations. We used ‘dotology’ to rank the words that we thought were most important to all of us and made a list of them to incorporate into the new school vision for 2018. These were as follows:

Effective communication, social skills, independence, creative, resilience, respect, self-confidence, challenging yourself, risk-taking, aspirational, empathy, curious and forward-thinking.

I’ve loved this week as I have had so many conversations with children about their successes out of school and the ways in which they are nurturing their talents. It was lovely to hear that Harlee, in year one, has been awarded a trophy and medal for his outstanding work on the football pitch with his passing skills and being very much improved so far this season. Likewise, Lucas in early years, has been awarded a trophy for his ability to be able to effectively tackle players on the pitch and the skill of saving goals. Very impressive, boys, and keep it up!

I also couldn’t think of a better end to the week than being in Early Years and being captured crawling into their brand NEW submarine. VERY exciting and the children were ecstatic about it. They found it super funny finding my head poking through! What a great place to work…I couldn’t think of a better job.

    Have a fabulous weekend, everyone!

Daniel – EYFS – for using and applying the phoneme ‘C’

Alfie – EYFS - for using his phonics towards some excellent reading and writing

Alfie – Year 1 – for writing excellent sentences independently about an astronaut

    Diary of the week:

Happy New Year and welcome back to you all!

Well, what an exciting start to the spring term. Everyone came back feeling fully refreshed and rearing to go and we have all hit the ground running in true Team GB style. The children were extremely positive and smiley on Monday morning and it was so lovely to see everybody back so positive. Everyone said how much they enjoyed breaking up later in December and having the time in January with family to chill and relax, and I am so pleased that to hear that you had a wonderful Christmas.

We started back on Monday evening with the first staff meeting of the year and enjoyed discussing the development of the vision. We talked about the skills and attitudes required of children when they leave us and also what is important to us as educators and for the children within our team. I look forward to discussing the vision further over the course of the term. Watch this space for a parental vision event coming up soon.

It was lovely this week to have a conversation with Jessica in year 4, who has been attending the Ilkeston brass band following our assembly in the autumn term. She has just been awarded the junior trophy for her attendance and commitment to the group, helping others and learning her material quickly by practising at home. I am very proud of you, Jessica.

The week couldn’t have ended better than also watching the year 2 parental engagement event to share their knowledge of the Great Fire of London. I witnessed dancing, drama and lots of singing, with many children learning lines for narrator parts too. There was a huge turn out from parents and, once again, it was so lovely to see so many of you there to experience the children’s learning.

After the first week back in January, enjoy the rest this weekend and take care,
