Fri 24 Nov 2017 Mrs Michelle Bates

    Week Ending 24th November 2017

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Gabriel – Year 6 – for going over and above what is expected of him

Tate – EYFS – for trying super hard when learning about 2D shapes

WILF will be visiting class 10 for 100% attendance.

Jessica will be visiting class 5 for 99.2% attendance.

Class 8 were also amazing in 3rd place with 99.1%.

    Diary of the week:

Another super week at Greasley Beauvale Primary School. Not as much excitement following Children in Need, and I did slightly miss dressing up as Pudsey Bear, but the buzz from all the children has been amazing and I have a very positive feel about the progress being made in the different year groups.

Monday started with myself, Mrs Clarke and Mrs Barrowcliffe completing lesson observations to look at the quality of teaching and learning and attitudes towards learning in every classroom. We all spent the day walking in and out of classrooms feeling very positive about the provision here at Greasley. I was also so positive to see so many children happy, developing resilience and challenging themselves onto the next stage of their leaning.

Throughout the week, I have heard many Christmassy activities and practices beginning to happen, and I am very exciting about watching the Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 performances later in the term. This year, the staff and children in each group are leading the performances and I just can’t wait to see their faces and personalities shine during the performances: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

I have also been very proud when showing round prospective parents for next year and dropping into classrooms with parents to show them what we are made of. Many of the parents have commented on the bright and friendly feel to the building and how well mannered, well behaved and welcoming the children are. It has been a great feeling to show off what we have on offer here, and to hear such positive comments from parents, who may have their children here with us in September.

Next week, I look forward to many events that are very exciting opportunities for the children of Greasley Beauvale Primary School. On Wednesday, I look forward to opening the doors to the year 3 parents so they can experience the art work in the year 3 gallery. On Friday, I am also very excited about taking 20 year 5 and 6 children, with Miss Busby and Miss Marvin, to the Christmas light switch-on at County Hall in Nottingham. An honour to be asked and a very exciting opportunity for the children. Another super link with the community.

Have a super weekend at this this busy time of year.

    Best wishes.

    Diary of the week:

What a great start to the week by receiving a notification about school being awarded with the silver award for the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM).

In September, Primary Science Quality Awards were awarded to 347 infant, junior, primary, middle and special schools to celebrate a commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

The Primary School Quality Mark scheme enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by professional development led by local experts. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching and learning.

The Primary Science Quality Mark is led by the University of Hertfordshire, School of Education in partnership with the Primary Science Teaching Trust. It is supported by the Royal Society for Chemistry, the Ogden Trust and the Association for Science Education.

Jane Turner, PSQM National Director said:

"Gaining a Primary Science Quality Award is a significant achievement for a school. The profile and quality of science teaching and learning in each awarded school is very high. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure science understanding and skills. Science subject leaders, their colleagues, head teachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.”

I would like to thank Mrs Lisa Clarke for leading on this area of the core curriculum over the last two years and co-ordinating Science extremely well since she joined the school in 2015. I would also like to thank the staff for their contributions towards the collation of evidence for the award and, of course, the children in their enthusiastic contributions to science over the years and this term. In addition, I thank Antony Pailing for his link with science across school as a parent governor. A great celebration and something to be very proud of in school this week.

Over the next term, Mrs Clarke will be creating a display within the school hall for science work, which has been given our ‘Science award’. Let’s go for Gold!

Well, the week ended brilliantly with our ‘Spotacular’ theme, and very own fashion show, in honor of Children in Need. The children wore their spottiest clothes and were very ‘mismatched’ as advised. The results were amazing and we had so much fun today in school. Goldbook was certainly the brightest and most colourful that we have seen for a long time.

Throughout the day, each class voted for their two favourite ‘spottiest’ pupils, and these children went head to head in a fashion show in front of the school during the morning.

The nominated children were as follows in each year group:

EYFS: Jonah, Evie-Mae, Alfie and Evie-Leigh

Year 1: Tommy, Riley, Beatrice and Grace

Year 2: Betsy, Haydn, Aaron and Lilly-May

Year 3: Bobby, Kaila, Reagan and Elvie

Year 4: Kieran, Holly, Charlie-May and Leah

Year 5: Izzy, Keelan, Chelsea and Ashton

Year 6: Sam, Paige, Hannah and Will

Their spotty efforts were put to the test and they impressed the school with their creations, enthusiasm and ‘spottiness’. We were very excited to see the results and can reveal the results as follows:

    1st Place: Tommy – Year 1

    2nd Place: Lilly- May – Year 2

    3rd Place: Ashton – Year 5

I was also VERY impressed by Jonah’s cat walking swagger, spotty face and bow-tie and Riley’s costume and homemade spotty collection tin. TRULY brilliant!  frown

I thoroughly enjoyed being Pudsey Bear for the morning and demonstrating how to strut on the cat walk…all the teachers did too! What a great morning of fun, whilst also showing the children how to raise the profile of charity work and how to help people, who may be less fortunate than ourselves!

A great day was had by all the staff and children and we are pleased to have raised £265 for Children in Need. We are very proud! A huge thanks to Miss India Marvin for organising the event, fundraising, fashion show and theme.

The year 2 children ended their day brilliantly also with a theatre workshop related to The Great Fire of London. They were very excited and had a super learning experience. Another fantastic day at Greasley Beauvale Primary with Team GB and the wonderful children!

Enjoy your weekend and see you all soon.

    Warm regards,

    Mrs Bates

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Imogen – Year 1 – for being really brave

WILF will be visiting class 7 for 100% attendance.

Jessica will be visiting class 12 for 99% attendance.

    Diary of the week:

Well, another fabulous week at Greasley Beauvale and an array of different activities to brighten up the children’s experiences.

The brightest part of the week certainly had to be Tuesday and Wednesday evenings when the hall was a bright mass of colours during the neon discos. Wow, two nights of fabulous entertainment for the children and a great fundraiser for children within school. I can’t thank the Greasley Beauvale Hub (PTA) enough for their level of commitment and forward planning to enable the event to take place. Between the EYFS and KS 1 disco on Tuesday and the KS 2 disco on Wednesday evening, a massive £812.69 was raised for the school fund. Obviously, plans will be put in place for spending this money on the children to further their learning or experiences in school.

DJ Chris was a huge feature of the disco and without his time, equipment and cheer talent at ensuring the children have an amazing time, and lots of fun, the disco may not have been possible. Thanks also to my wonderful team of teachers, teaching assistants and parent volunteers, who gave up their time during the week to ensure that the children were supervised. It really was a fabulous event.

In addition, the children looked absolutely fabulous in their white and neon clothing and this couldn’t have happened without your support and planning. Thank you to EVERYONE…what a team effort! Mr Rod Parent, our new Chair of Governors, also came at the end to share the success and thought what a wonderful event it appeared to have been. He also shared his thanks.

On Monday evening, we held our Full Governing Body meeting and some changes were made. Following my letter to you all on Tuesday, I can confirm that there is a parent governor vacancy and information will follow. Again, I share my thanks to Dr. Lousie Bramley for her role as Chair, Mr Richard Wood as Vice Chair and Nikki Bilson as parent Governor over the years.

Yesterday, we had the experience in school of an African drumming workshop, which told stories through music. The children had a great experience and enjoyed the tales. I was certainly engrossed at one point.

We also held our staff meeting last night on our new data system using ‘Insight’. Data and assessment is forever changing, but we are currently looking at a system, which makes understanding and interpreting the data easier. Point scores and numbers have sometimes led to questions and confusion and our aim is trying to make this easier for parents to understand. We are also trying to make the language of assessment more consistent with the data shared at the end of key Stage one and Key Stage 2 following Standard Assessment Tests (SATs). At the end of these milestones, through the primary phases, we use the language of ‘below’, ‘working towards’, ‘working at’ and working at ‘greater depth’ within the standard. As a school, we are trying to make this more consistent across all year groups, including EYFS. More details to follow when the have the system up and running and have more data to share with you in the spring. Watch this space…

In the meantime, we all hope that you have an amazing weekend. It’s cold outside, but still autumnal. Enjoy the sunshine and bright days, whilst they last. Have fun and enjoy family time!

    Warm regards,

    Mrs Bates

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Max – Year 3 – for his super workings out when adding

Jake – Year 3 for always putting in 100% effort at home as well as school

    Diary of the week:

Welcome back to the second half of the autumn term; I cannot actually believe it’s November already. I promise not to mention the ‘C’ word just yet.

The week started a lot chillier than when we broke up, but the sun shone and it was lovely to see so many refreshed faces back in the playground as school reopened at the beginning of the week. The children returned to school in a smart, positive manner and the atmosphere on Monday morning really was one of gusto. After spending two days in school over the holidays, it really was great to have everyone back to fill the building with enthusiasm and a buzz for learning.

Thank you to everyone, who attended parents’ evening this week. It was lovely to see so many of you and chat with you informally about your child’s experiences in school and to hear how well they are getting on. I did not have to have one negative conversation and that was heart-warming at the end of a long day. I hope you found the termly report informative and useful and that you heard messages that will help you to support your child over the next term.

In addition, thank you to everyone who has purchased books this week. We managed to sell hundreds of pounds worth of books and the commission from this really helps us to stock the shelves with new books in school. Thank you very much!

A reminder that next week, there will be the EYFS and KS1 disco on Tuesday and the KS2 disco on Wednesday. Both discos have a ‘neon’ theme and finish at 5pm. Thanks to ‘The Greasley Hub’ for putting so much time and effort into the selling of the tickets this week. MASSIVE thanks also to Oliver, in year 5, who helped his mum to find names on register lists and locate classes; sell tickets and work out change and provide tickets to his customer. He was a ‘life saver’ and a ‘star’. Thank you so much, Oliver.

Next week, in our staff meeting, we will starting to focus on the school vision. I am very excited to see what this will begin to look like over time. In the Spring term, we will also be taking views from all stakeholders in a view to relaunch a new school vision and fresh outlook of Greasley Beauvale Primary School. Remember that you can tell us about your thoughts about school using parent view as we really do value your opinion:

Take care and have a super weekend. Keep safe during these darker nights, and during bonfire night, and remember keep warm and dry.

    Warm regards,

    Mrs Bates
