  • Head Teacher's Blog!

Thu 26 Oct 2017 Mrs Michelle Bates

    Hello all,

I just wanted to say that I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday and that you are all managing to have some special family time together; making memories! I am in school working today, and I can honestly say the building does not have the same feeling without the wonderful staff and children of Greasley Beauvale Primary School here with me.

There were a few illnesses before we broke up last Thursday, but I hope you are all now well again and fighting fit.

Enjoy the holidays, everyone! Have fun, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday morning.

    Warm regards,

    Mrs Bates

    Week Ending 20th October 2017

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Eva – EYFS – for her great Mendhi pattern and super concentration.

There is no Gold Book this week due to the INSET Day tomorrow. However, I am pleased with Class 8 for 100% attendance and class 4 for achieving 99% attendance.

    Diary of the week:

I really cannot believe that we are already at the end of the first half term of the academic year…and what a half term it has been. I am so proud of all the children and the whole team here at Greasley Beauvale. From the word go, everyone was truly on board and all children, staff and stakeholders have worked so hard. I thank everyone for their support in what has felt like a very busy and productive half term, including our very committed team of governors. School feels fabulous and we know the direction we are travelling in.

The children really have excelled this half term and during this week everyone has been involved in their half-termly assessments and have been doing great. It has also been noticed that children are approaching their learning with a Growth Mindset and thinking about how they can challenge themselves further and tackle their learning challenges with resilience, risk-taking and perseverance. I have certainly given out many headteacher’s awards and Gold Book certificates with such comments.

In addition, I have also started to receive messages from parents about how their children have begun to think about ways to persevere at home, work with parents and not to give up: not just with homework, but with tasks associated with home life too…and that is truly great! For instance, Robyn in class 2 got a jigsaw for her birthday. She was a bit worried that it might be tricky at first because it had 100 pieces, and therefore she asked her mum to help. When they’d finished, she gave her mum a high five for good teamwork, and said, 'That's what happens when you keep on trying, you can do it!' Mum shared this success story with the Early Years Team and felt this showed a great positive mindset! (Mum’s words, not mine!) - I couldn’t agree more. See Robyn’s fabulous jigsaw picture below; a picture she is very proud of.

This week, I also had a very positive meeting with ‘The Greasley Beauvale Hub’, who are ‘At the heart of the parents; the children; the school’. This team of parents are doing much work behind the scenes, along with Miss India Marvin, to arrange events, discos and fairs that will raise money for school fund. School fund allows us to spend money on the children when certain events or possibilities come to light. I can’t thank the ladies enough and they are always seeking new members to extend their team if anyone else is interested in joining…even dads! If so, then please let myself, the office or Donna Kemp know (parent in year 5).

This week has been a mixture of sporting events and preparing for Christmas performances. The football team performed very well yesterday and on Tuedsay, a team of year 5 and 6 children went to Awsworth Primary School to compete on new PE technologies with other schools in the local area and beyond. We did very well at both events and I am proud of all who took part, including the teachers and Glenn, who helped to make sure the events ran smoothly, safely and successfully. The ‘Christmas Crew’ have also been busy with their play auditions, and I can’t wait to see them get started with lines and song words in the lead up to Christmas.

We hope that school life for you here at Greasley Beauvale is going well so far. Please feel free to discuss any issues with class teachers or myself. On the flip side, share the success stories too.

Remember that tomorrow is an INSET Day and school is closed to the children. Have a great half term holiday with your families and a reminder that we return to school on Monday 30th October 2017.

Take care, keep safe and be happy!

    Warm regards,

  • Football Update

    Wed 18 Oct 2017 Glenn

    Good evening, all!

    Results from today's event...

We played 4 group games and won them all; scoring 11 goals and conceding 0.

Having won the group, we played Gilthill in the semi-final and we beat them 3-0.

We then played larkfields in the final and, unfortunately, lost 1-0.
They had one shot on goal and won the game (I'm probably biased but we were the better team).

A special mention to all the players for being brilliant!

    Regards
    Glenn

    Diary of the week:

Well, another busy week at Greasley Beauvale and what a pleasurable week too!

The week started on Monday morning with a return from Mrs Tantum to deliver our Harvest Festival assembly. It was BRILLIANT; so lovely to see so many children with their contributions for local food banks and what a fabulous assembly. Mrs Tantum had Miss Busby and Mr Leyshon go head-to-head with Mr Leyshon and Mr Fisher to make the best breakfast for me, using ingredients from harvested produce. I had vegetable skewers, ham sandwiches, strawberries and cream and much more! One team produced a well-presented plate, whilst the other plate was a little more…let’s say…creative. I could not decide on a winner, as the point to the assembly was that we should appreciate the food we are presented with each and every day. I thank Mrs Tantum for returning to us and producing such a brilliant assembly with a fun tone, but a very powerful message. The children also sang some great harvest songs and raised the roof for Harvest!

Throughout the week, we have witnessed some great learning and some fabulous lessons. On Monday evening, I spoke with the teachers about creating a ‘Growth Mindset’ with the children and allowing them to become more independent and challenge themselves further. We talked about the questioning and praise we use with children to allow them to develop their own mindset and think more creatively, positively and independently. Following this, Miss Busby did an assembly about the power of the word ‘YET!’ Children received the message that it is ok to fail, ok to get stuck, ok to take risks and not be able to do something ‘YET!’ The point being, that we can all hit a hurdle or barrier at some point but the power of ‘YET!’ means we will be able to do it soon, or over time, with practice, resilience and perseverance. The children and teachers have taken this on board really well and are working on ‘Growth Mindset’ well.

This week, we have also employed a teacher to temporarily cover Mrs Henshaw’s maternity leave. Mrs Sandra Ramsby will be working in Early Years, Year One and Year Two over the course of the week, covering the teacher’s planning, preparation and assessment time (PPA). We look forward to working with her and welcome her to Team GB.

Today, it was fabulous to develop further links with Hall Park Academy. The year six children spent the morning on a transition visit experiencing maths, English and science lessons in a secondary setting. What a great experience for them at this stage! The children enjoyed the morning and I look forward to further experiences for them over the course of the year.

My day ended today in the best way possible: meeting KS 2 about the Christmas production with the ‘Christmas Crew’, followed by sitting in on a workshop for Early Years parents. KS 2 children cannot wait to get started on their ‘Scrooge’ production and I look forward to the auditions, which start next week. The staff are VERY excited too!

Everyone is working so hard and we are all ready for next week when we will be doing our first assessments of the children’s learning. After half term, we will communicate this with you in the form of the Autumn report, and don’t forget parents evening, which is scheduled for the 1st November (3.15pm – 6.30pm).

After another busy week, I hope you all have a relaxing or fun-packed weekend. Enjoy!

    Warm regards

    Week Ending 6th October 2017

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Oliver – Year 6 – for incredible persuasive speech packed full of emotive vocabulary

Lauren – Year 5 – for being determined and not giving up when things were tough

Olivia – Year 5 – for outstanding use of embedded clauses and relative pronouns

Joshua – Year 2 – for fantastic effort in handwriting

Jake – EYFS – for fantastic effort when learning tricky words

Alice – EYFS – for fantastic homework on creating repeating patterns and additional phonics

Ethan – EYFS – for creating a fantastic rocket using the hammer and pin shapes, which he copied from a picture accurately

Three classes achieved 100% attendance last week and praise goes to class 1, 7 and 12. I love the fact that children know why attendance is so importance and all children are now striving for their gold, silver or bronze pin badge at the end of the year.

    Diary of the week:

Blimey, Friday again all ready! It does not seem like two minutes since we were preparing for the Macmillan coffee afternoon last week and what an absolute success that was. All at Team GB spent all weekend waiting to hear what we had raised in total, and we were astonished to find out that everyone associated with the Greasley Beauvale community helped to raise £1,652.64 for this very worthy charity. I think the photograph at the bottom of this feed REALLY epitomises the delight and gratitude of the year 6 team.

Well, this week, we were back to our learning and busy working hard. Yesterday was amazing; Mrs Clarke and I went on a walk around school (with our clipboards) to see what learning looked like on a typical Thursday afternoon here at school. Below are some of the positive attitudes to learning that we spotted:

    • Focussed, attentive learning atmospheres in all lessons and interventions.
    • Marking policy followed on all classroom displays.
    • Celebration of scholarship and work to be proud of, from across the curriculum.
    • Working walls being used well as an additional learning resource.
    • Evidence on displays, in teacher talk and through dialogue between children, that expectation for ambitious vocabulary use is increasing.
    • Displays evolving over the term and becoming more interactive.
    • The achievements of children outside of school are recognised and valued in lots of places around school.
    • Evidence of exciting risk taking in lessons and interventions.
    • Use of well-managed, focussed outdoor learning.
    • Clear evidence that adults’ approaches to teaching and learning generate high engagement.
    • Clear links, where appropriate, to whole school focus on tolerance.
    • Range of quality resources being utilised to support all learners.
    • Questioning is being used effectively to encourage children to solve problems and become more independent in their approach to learning.
    • Increasing use of, quality texts being used as a stimulus for learning across the curriculum.
    • Subject leaders leading by example.
    • High quality, tailored interventions running across school.
    • Impact from Teaching Assistants across school is very high.

A great picture across school and lovely to see so much learning taking place in an enthusiastic, inquisitive and positive manner. School is a hive of excitement currently and children are eager to do their very best.

During a great Gold Book this morning, Ava (in year 2) was congratulated on her leadership skills! I didn’t wait long and could not wait to have her on the team. Consequently, this afternoon we did a learning walk together. She was great with her clipboard and said the following about teaching and learning across school:

    • Neat handwriting
    • Putting hands up
    • Good listening
    • Good spelling
    • Good reading
    • They’re doing their purple pen
    • Sitting quietly
    • Good lining up

Thank you so much, Ava…a great leader for the future!

Looking forward to next week, a reminder that Thursday is the individual school photos for all children across school. Get smiling!

Today we say goodbye to Katie Henshaw for a while as she starts her journey as a mummy and moves into her maternity months. Mrs Henshaw was due to start her maternity the week after next, but has made the right decision to look after herself, and her family, and put her feet up a week earlier than planned before ‘baby Henshaw’ makes an appearance. I will keep you posted on the exciting news. This term, Mrs Henshaw has not been class-based and has been covering planning, preparation and assessment time (PPA) across Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2. Next Thursday, we have teacher interviews to cover this time in her absence and again, I will update you on the new teacher’s name until Mrs Henshaw returns sometime next year. I think you will all join me in wishing her well and good luck as she welcomes a newcomer to her family unit. Best Wishes, Katie!

Following that successful conclusion to another great week at Greasley Beauvale, I wish you all well and a very happy weekend with your families.

    Take care,
