Well, another Jam-packed week in school. It felt a little empty on Monday morning, due to year 6 being on their residential, but what a great time they had. You can read up on their experiences here at ‘Latest News’. They had fun, displayed exemplary behaviour and kept themselves safe. I was pleased to have spent the day with them last Sunday and very proud of them. Thanks to all of the adults for taking them along and supporting them in conquering their fears and rising to the challenges.

This week has been very exciting in school for different reasons. However, nothing is more exciting than a dinosaur invasion on the playground for EYFS. I was called for an emergency ‘high-viz jacket’ visit to class 1 and 2 mid-week. The children were SO excited to show me their photographic evidence of dinosaurs in their outside area and the KS1 playground. Both myself, the staff and children could not quite believe our eyes! They shared their dinosaur invasion pictures with me and all of their experiences. What a great day was had by all! I hope they don’t return though and scare us all.

Year 3 had a great day on Wednesday with activities linked to their topics this half term. They made bird feeders in the morning and then ended the day with an afternoon of cooking. They prepared and cooked pizzas as a year group, followed by fruit kebabs. It was a great day for them and it was so lovely to see so many parents, who joined in too.

Apologies for the sports day cancellation yesterday. However, I had the best interests of the children, and families, at heart and of course health and safety. Moving forward, we will ensure that next year, sports day will be held earlier in the summer term and during the morning sessions. It was disappointing, and frustrating, for all the staff and children too. We hope for a successful event next year and before the end of term we may get to do some informal activities amongst our key stages.

Today, a letter has gone out about the teaching structure for September 2018. Lots of time and considerations go into such plans and we hope that you find this information useful at this stage.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine as temperatures are due to soar even higher.

    Warm regards,

  • Football Festival

    Thu 28 Jun 2018

On Wednesday 27th June, a group of year 2 children represented the school in a football festival which was held at Brookhill Leys Primary School.

The children had a great afternoon.  They took part in several skills session and played 3 games against other local primary schools.  We won all 3 games, scored 12 goals and only conceded 2.  There were no trophies awarded for the winners, only a fair play award which was won by Hollywell Primary School.

We all had a wonderful time and all the children were fantastic. Well done to everyone who took part.

  • PGL Update Day 2

    Tue 26 Jun 2018 year 6 team

    Good evening everyone!

We've had another lovely sunny day, jam-packed with great activities! Today's activities have included the zip wire, abseiling, orienteering and fencing - some of which a lot of our Year 6's hadn't even heard of!

Abseiling and the zip wire were the exhilarating activities of the day, with lots of the children overcoming their fear of heights and things that travel really really quickly in the air! Fencing was brilliant too, with lots of our Year 6s showing us what absolute pros they are... despite a lot not knowing what it was beforehand! Orienteering gave us all the chance to have a good explore of the ground, though we didn't forget it was a competition! There were some serious map skills going on!

We really enjoyed Cluedo last night, and many of the groups identified the 'kidnapper' in our midst.

Tonight - disco! The kids are gearing up to show us some smooth moves. Bets are on for how many times we see the floss on the dance floor!

Looking forward to what tomorrow brings before we see you all in the afternoon 😊

  • PGL Update Day 1

    Tue 26 Jun 2018 Year 6 team

    Hi everyone!

We've just finished our adventurous activities for the day and have absolutely loved it! Raft building was fantastic - we were muddy and soggy but we didn't care! We also did giant swing and the trapeze... both took a lot of nerve but a lot of us overcame our fear our heights.. including the teachers!

We had great fun doing 'Splash' last night (though none of our water balloons survived the drop!) and tonight we have Cluedo which we're all really excited about!

Look out for tomorrow's update ☺️

Blimey, how are we nearly at the end of June already?

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone, who bought plants last week at the plant sale. The sale yielded £300, with an additional £80 coming from the Elderberries trip, which Miss Marvin supervised. A very successful trip in to our local community. We are making greater links within the community and we aim to go and sing at the Elderberries at Christmas.

A great week at school. The week started with Early Years going on their first trip out of Greasley Beauvale. As part of their topic on ‘Adventures’, they visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. I am told that they had a great time and behaved very well. They learnt about lots of the different animals and saw polar bears for the first time. They were very inquisitive, asked great questions and came away with memories and new knowledge. I am very proud of them.

On Monday, the year sixes also took over the field to share their learning and knowledge of different skills that they have away from school. It was very exciting as for the first time ever, we had ponies, sheep and a tractor in school. It was amazing to see what skills the children have and how our children have so much to offer. Thank you to the year 6 team for organising such an event, the children for showing off their talents and expertise and the parents for coming along to be part of it.

To join the week of excitement, the year one children also ventured out of the classroom to visit the National Space Centre on Thursday. Once again, like the Early Years children, they were well behaved, well mannered, and inquisitive about the world around them and beyond. They were very excited and asked some great questions. They too came away with memories and new-found knowledge and experiences. I too and am very proud of their conduct and attitude.

We are in the process of finalising the new school vision for September 2018. However, I can let you know that from September we will be celebrating new Rainbow values. We took views from parents, children, governors and children and the ‘Rainbow Values’ will be as follows:

Respect and acceptance – “Everyone is equal, everyone is unique”

Active body and active mind – “Take ownership over your health and well-being”

Inclusive yet individual – “Embrace diversity and be proud of who you are”

Nurture, develop and grow – “Persevere and take risks with your talents and potential”

Believe in yourself – “Be confident in your choices”

Overcome your obstacles – “Be brave, show resilience and challenge yourself”

Wonder and curiosity – “Ask questions and seek answers”

I can’t wait to share the rest with you!

For the last few years, we have entered many sporting competitions, and the children have done very well. I am extremely proud that this has been developed this year and the children have really blown me away with their talents and achievements. This week, we won the district tennis final and have now been entered into the Nottinghamshire final at the Nottingham tennis centre. AMAZING! In addition, we came third in the district sports competition on Wednesday. The children were amazing and won a few gold and bronze medals and many silvers! The achievement for this group of children was outstanding and a huge leap in the right direction for us as a school. Well done to Mr Leyshon with his efforts towards sport this year (and competitive achievement).

I also heard this week, that we have another child signing for Notts County football club – Isaac Petts – cracking news and very proud of him and his achievements.

What a week and so much positivity to share! Roll on next week…remember the suntan creams, hats and water…it’s going to be a scorcher!

    Have a great weekend

    Warm regards,

Well, what a busy first FULL week back. I started the week by reminding the children about the new school rules of ‘Ready, Respectful and Safe’ and the children are already talking about the way in which they can demonstrate them. In assembly, I talked about what can happen when you’re not ‘ready’ and I made them smile with my story of snoozing the alarm on a Monday morning.

The week then started with our wonderful Year One children taking part in the annual statutory Phonics Screening Check. I was so proud of each and every one of them for trying so hard to gain the scores that they did (and deserved). Over the course of the week, I observed some of the tests taking place and I think the children did a fabulous job; I was so proud! I would also like to thank all the staff involved with the phonics tests as they have been working hard all year to prepare the children and to get them ready for year 2. In addition, some children re-did their tests in year 2 this week and they did fab too! I would like to thank all the teachers and teaching assistants, who were involved in the tests.

Yesterday afternoon, we welcomed many grandparents into school for a rainbow themed afternoon. It was such a positive atmosphere and was so lovely to see so many grandparents in school. Every class did an activity, which resembled rainbows or rainbow colours and the art work created was fabulous. With a view to having ‘Rainbow Values’ from September, the children have created some amazing pieces for display. The afternoon went very well in general and I thank the Greasley Hub for providing teas and coffees throughout the afternoon and to Miss Marvin for planning the whole event.

A reminder that the new sports day date is Friday 29thJune and the arrangements from before still stand.

    Have a great weekend

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Harlee – Year 1 – For going over and above board with his phonics practice in the half term holidays…twenty extra pages in fact!

I was also delighted this week to find out that Hope, in year 4, got 'Numero Uno on her birthday'. Hope rides for the RDA and is due to compete in regional finals soon. Before this though, she took part in an art competition. The photo below shows her receiving her rosette for double 1st place in the regional art and craft competition organised by riding for the disabled. We are all really proud of her and wish her well and good luck for her competition later this term. Well done, Hope!

    Week Ending 8th June 2018

WOW, what a super week and so eventful to say it was the first 3 days back after the half term holiday.

On Monday and Tuesday, whilst the children were on INSET days, we had two very productive days in school. Monday was all based on behaviour, where we began to think about devising a new behaviour policy. At a time when we are thinking about our new vision for September, it was time to reflect on how we approach behaviour. The first concept we started to think about were school rules and we realised that We had lots; rules for the classrooms, corridors, hall, lunch, playtimes…etc. This was a perfect time to streamline the school rules and consider how we make these understandable, consistent and powerful for everyone.

We came up with 3 words…yes, just 3 words: Ready, Respect and Safe.

Ready – Ready for learning, lessons, school, homework, PE, reading, challenges…and more!

Respect – teachers, peers, adults, dinner ladies, each other, belongings, school property…everything!

Safe – Be safe in the playground, on trips, in the classroom, with equipment, walking to school, with each other…all the time!

We have further decisions to make over the next half term, but when we have them finalised, I look forward to sharing them with you.

Already, the majority of children know the new words and I am so proud of how they have understood the idea behind having just three words to concentrate on. We will be using these words a lot…why not try them at home?

On Tuesday, the teachers were beginning to write their annual reports about the children and beginning to make decisions about the attainment, progress, ‘school readiness’ and general comments for the children. I have read some already and the comments are fabulous, reflecting a great year in school. We can’t wait to share them with you.

On Wednesday, it was Mrs Jamson’s first day in school with the children as the new Deputy Head Teacher. She was very excited to meet them and already she is beginning to get a good feel for the place. She has refreshing ideas and a fresh pair of eyes. Mrs Jamson is not currently class based, but will be boosting in some year groups across school to get them prepared for the next stage of Greasley Beauvale. Next year, she will be job sharing but we have not finalised the teaching structure yet for September 2018.

The children have come back after the break so refreshed and ready to learn and it has had a brilliant feel in school. The children are positive, excited about their new topics and LOTS of exciting things are happening this half term; vocation week, transition time, trips, parent events, summer fair...and much more! We also have sports day tomorrow and I can’t wait.

I like to blog about the whole week, but I will leave Mr Leyshon to shine in this area as I know it’s going to be a fantastic day and we look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. I look forward to posting about the winners for sports day, the successes of the afternoon and how fabulous Mr Leyshon was.

    Have a great weekend

    Warm regards,

    Michelle Bates
