  • Cross Country winners and runner ups

Wed 24 Apr 2024 Mrs Parnell

    Hello everyone,

I am very happy to let you know that our Cross Country Squad ALL ran exceptionally well at Florence Nightingale Academy this morning. We were well aware that the squad appeared to be very strong this year and they certainly proved that to be the case. It was a busy event with each race having roughly 75 runners in-from a total of 15 schools.

As usual, the Greasley children excelled in their behaviour and encouragement to each other and to other children in other schools too. I know that our great supporters were very impressed with the children’s team spirit, resilience and enthusiasm.

Many of our children were placed in the top ten in their race. A special mention must be given to Denny who came second in the year 5/6 boys' race.

When announcing which school had won the shields for the girls and the boys, you could have heard a pin drop as it gradually became clearer and clearer that Greasley was to feature in the top places.

I am so proud to say that this year our team of girls won the shield and the boys came second – pipped to the top spot by only 2 points.

    What an amazing morning!

Thank you to all children and all supporters and also to those children who were our reserves for each race.

Thank you to Miss Marvin and Mrs Clarke for running the trials with me.

Wow children – what great achievements by you all.

    Mrs Parnell and Mrs Pailing.

  • Mid-Week update from Year 5

Tue 23 Apr 2024 Miss Dyer and Miss Leame

Wow! What a fantastic afternoon we have had in Indigo 1.

Paul Day (one of our governors) came in to talk to the children about our local history topic: mining. He bought in lots of artefacts which his grandad used when he was a miner, and they used the thinking routine 'I see, I think, I wonder' to share their thoughts and ideas about each one.

Paul and I were extremely impressed with some of the ideas and questions that the children had, and they were all super engaged and interested in some of the stories Paul shared with them.

They have bought home a piece of coal as a bit of a souvenir from the afternoon - hopefully this will spark some conversations at home about any family members that have experience working in the mines!

Well done for a fabulous afternoon Indigo 1 - you did Greasley proud! 🌈

  • Mrs Bailey - Marathon runner

Mon 22 Apr 2024 Mrs Bates

We are very proud to say that, yesterday, Mrs Bailey ran the London Marathon. She ran the whole distance in 4 hours and 49 minutes and was tracked by many staff members, children and parents using apps. We were luckily to have captured the images of her crossing the finishing line and that huge smile (and mixed emotions) afterwards.

This has been a huge achievement for Mrs Bailey and she is in school today and keeping on her feet moving. She is proudly wearing her medal and inspiring many children and staff with her stories and memories. It was heart warming to hear her speak in assembly this morning to the whole school.

She decided to run the 26.2 miles in memory of her father in law, Julian, who sadly passed away suddenly in 2022. All money raised will be donated to the British Heart Foundation in memory of Julian. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please use the link below.

We are very proud of Mrs Bailey. We think she has done exceptionally well over the last year and achieved many of our Rainbow Values along the way (not just yesterday, but after months of hard training).

Please join us in congratulating her, and please donate if you feel you can spare a few pennies. Thank you. Well done, Mrs Bailey. You are now the second Greasley staff member to have completed the London marathon following Mrs Bold, who achieved this 11 years ago.

Both staff members have entered again for next year - I wish them all the luck in gaining an entry place, running again and achieving new PBs.

Jensen - Orange 1 - For amazing work using a categorising frame to decide if an animal is a herbivore or not

  • Midweek Updates

    Tuesday

Indigo 1 had a great time at Aldercar Tuesday morning! 🎨🖌

The children spent some time learning about aboriginal art and creating their own pieces of art work based on an animal of their choice.

Pictures on Weduc showed the children were very engaged and excited and staff voice showed positivity and encouragement. I was very proud of the children.

    Wednesday

Wow - what an absolutely fantastic day we have had in Year 4!

🔵 We started the morning at a Roman marching camp and met our Roman Centurion. We learnt about the history of the invasion, talked through the roles in camp, discussed the different part of legionary armour and learnt about some of the day to day things Romans would have used. The Centurion lit a fire and prepared some traditional Roman food for us to try after lunch.

🟢 Next, we had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities: cleaned ourselves using olive oil and a strigil, cleaned armour, wrote our names in Latin with a wax tablet and stylus, played a number of Roman games, used a rotary stone quern to grind wheat, used mini catapults and used a loom to weave.

🟡 After lunch, we looked at a range of Roman artefacts. The oldest was a coin that was approximately 2,100 years old. It was then time for us to try the food - Roman hardtack and a lentil stew, yum! There were mixed reviews given - some children wanted seconds, some spat it out!

🟠 It was then time to go back onto the field to prepare for battle. The children had the opportunity to learn and say commands in Latin, hold a shield, practise marching in time and perform the testudo. The adults had the opportunity to spot weaknesses in the formation and stop them from advancing.

All in all a fantastic day. We can't wait to deepen our learning throughout the topic.

  • Welcome to the Rainbows Nursery

Mon 15 Apr 2024 Mrs Bates

WOW...possibly the most exciting start to a summer term EVER!

After officially lowering our age range to 3, today we opened our nursery and welcomed the 'Rainbows' cohort.

We were so impressed with how the children started their school life with us and they were settled and active from the 'get go'. The coped very well and already feel part of the Greasley team.

The Rainbows children join us at lunchtime in the school hall and have joined in excellently with continuous provision, lunches and school life.

We are ready for the next term... :)

Welcome to Mrs Hatton, who has joined us as a learning support assistant (LSA) in the nursery. In addition, we have Mrs Woodcock and Mrs Jameson, who have joined the nursery midday team! Already, all new members of staff are an asset to the nursery team.

A huge well done to Mrs Atamaniuk (EYFS lead) for turning the dream into a reality.

What a success already from one very happy Head Teacher,

    Mrs Bates
