  • Head Teacher's Blog!

Fri 20 Dec 2019 Mrs Bates

    20th December … Christmas update!

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Reagan Day – Yellow 1 – For her fantastic efforts in writing. During a shared write about the plague, she took so much care to use the correct spellings for topic words. The handwriting used too was just fabulous!

Sonny – Red 2 – For his picture of a polar bear. He followed the instructions from the Squigglet programme. Great concentration and a super end-product.

Ruben - Yellow 2 - For writing an independent letter with beautiful handwriting, conjunctions, a question and an exclamation sentence. A wonderful piece of work, well done

Haydn - Blue 1 - For having an amazing last few weeks in school. He was a role model in the year 3 and 4 production, by singing and speaking clearly, and he was also able to overcome his obstacles. He has been incredibly polite and respectful to me today and he is an asset to the class and himself.

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to Orange 1 for 98.3% attendance.

2nd place goes to yellow 1 for 98.2% attendance.

3rd place goes to yellow 2 for 98.1% attendance.

Well, if last week wasn’t Christmassy enough for you, then this week truly was … what a brilliant week in school!

The week started off with the dress rehearsals for both the year 3 and 4 Christmas performance and the year 5 and 6 carol concert. This year, we chose to split KS2 into two separate performances and this really did work and was a huge success. It allowed for more children to shine during the performances and for the children to do age-appropriate celebrations.

Year 3 and 4 performed the Christmas show of ‘Hosanna Rock’. This is a popular nativity, which conveys the true meaning of Christmas. It is a musical that includes contemporary songs, hand-jives and movement to produce a lively and enjoyable performance. This is exactly what the children of years 3 and 4 did. Thank you to each and every one of them and the year 5 and 6 team.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we then saw the year 5 and 6 children perform their ‘Seven Readings and Carols’ event in both the church and school. Both performances were wonderful and the magic of Christmas really was high during the church performance. The children sang and spoke professionally, and with a smile! Thanks to all who came along to watch and support the children and staff. Well done to Mrs Parnell, Mrs Jamson and the year 5 and 6 team for leading it so well.

On Wednesday, the reception children hosted another ‘book and buttie’ morning in the hall. Many parents, grandparents and carers attended and it was lovely to see so much reading taking place…and with a ‘hearty’ breakfast. Thanks once again for supporting another event in school.

Yesterday was Christmas dinner day…and what a celebration! I was dishing out the brussels, carrots, stuffing and mini sausages and I loved every minute of it with the ladies in the kitchen. We had live music being played by Mr Parnell and all the staff joined the children in the hall for their lunch also. Over 300 meals were cooked in total and it was a huge success. Thanks so much to Steph and the team.

Today has been fabulous with Christmas jumpers and the festivities!

    Christmas wishes everyone,

  • Fundraising Update!

Thu 19 Dec 2019 Mrs Bates

Dear Parents, carers, grandparents and supporters of Greasley Beauvale Primary School,

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the Christmas festivities in school over the last three weeks. We have had many events in school and lots of money has been raised for school fund due to your kind donations and involvement.

Grandparents' afternoon raised £37.00 from the sale of teas and coffees.

The Christmas fair brought in a total of £1317.00.

£1143 was also kindly donated after the Christmas performances across school.

Therefore, we made 'almost' £2500.00 for the children.

In addition, we also made approximately £400 on commission from the book fair during parents' evenings and therefore this will enable us to buy new books and fill those shelves in the library.

We are all so very grateful for the money raised and we will make plans in 2020 for the next project for the children.

Thank you so much to everyone. Your generosity and support means the world to us.

May I also take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2020. We will see you all in the new year.

    Festive wishes,

    Mrs Bates

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Kenny – Blue 2 – For creating a fantastic ‘I am, I wonder’ poem. He also persevered when things got tough. Well done, Kenny.

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to Red 2 for 97.9% attendance.

2nd place goes to Orange 1 for 97.8% attendance.

3rd place goes to Orange 2 for 97.7% attendance.

Another fantastic Christmassy week in school. It all started with the Christmas festivities at the annual Christmas fair. On Monday evening, we opened the doors for this event and it was fabulous. The majority of the fair was organised by the children, as all classes had a £50 budget to make and sell a product (for a profit!). We saw baubles, Christmas tags, reindeer food, friendship bracelets, baked biscuits and much more. We also had some parents selling items on stalls and once again our raffle and tombola was a huge success. I wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped out to run a store, Steph and the kitchen staff for the refreshments and to Mrs Barrowcliffe for running the event and planning it all at short notice. A big thanks to the children and staff who stayed behind after school and of course to the parents for coming along to support. The event was a huge success and it made just under £1400…a whopping achievement and great news. The money will be placed into school fund and then we will decide what our next school project will be. Last time, it was the school playground projects…what could be next?

On Wednesday and Thursday, the reception and Key Stage 1 children performed their Christmas show of ‘Donkey’s first Christmas’. This play was written by Miss Schofield, in her own time, and it was truly brilliant. It was a sensational performance and the children really shone. We had children as young as 4 in the performance and their stars really did shine. There was an array of different characters and I really was very proud of them all. Once again thanks to all the teachers and TAs for their work on the play, to the children for learning so many lines and songs and to the parents for coming along to watch them and support. Thanks again to Steph and Anne for the refreshments! It was truly another fantastic event.

The week ended well with Mrs Parnell’s Christmas choir performing in the school hall for their ‘Carols and coffee’ event. They were very professional and the way that they conducted themselves was admirable and inspiring. The choir sang 5 Christmas songs excellently and they even got a whoop and a cheer from their audience. Thank you to Mrs Parnell for her input into the new school choir…they could not get to that standard, that quickly, without her professional and musical talent also.

Another thanks to Steph and all the donations this week. We have made another £476 for school fund! Wow and thank you!

A fantastic week in school. Next week, we have the year 3 and 4 Christmas performance and the year 5 and 6 carol service. I can’t wait and we really will be ready for Christmas by Friday 20th when we break up.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Warm regards,

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Teddy, Livia and Matilda – Red 2 – for independently following instructions from the smartboard to enable them to draw perfect penguins. They were fabulous!

Jake – Yellow2 – Super explanation of subtraction methods. He talked about exchanging 1 ten for 10 ones.

Ollie - Green 1 – For his insatiable thirst for times tables. His score and progress have been truly unbelievable. What a star!

Joey - Indigo 2 - For his handwriting. He has made huge efforts to his improve his style and he is very proud of himself. So are we!

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to Blue 1 for 99.2% attendance.

2nd place goes to Yellow 1 for 98.6% attendance.

3rd place goes to Blue 2 for 98.2% attendance.

Wow…this week has certainly started to feel more Christmassy. The tree is up, post box is out and play rehearsals are underway.

Monday afternoon was lovely to see Grandparents helping the children with the Christmas festivities and preparations. Many classes used their £50 budget to make a product of their choice to sell at the Christmas fair for a festive profit on Monday. I saw classes making baubles, bracelets, gift tags and decorations. Thank you to all the grandparents, who came to school on Monday afternoon. We had approximately 245 visitors to school and one granddad even visited from Liverpool. School was very full and very busy, and it was lovely to see so many of the grandparents engaged in the children’s festive preparations.

On Tuesday, I had Lorna Naylor from the Local Authority visit school to talk about her team, who support schools and parents with different areas of the wider school curriculum. She works within the Tackling Emerging Threats to Children Team (TETC) and we have booked her to do some training with staff, parents and governors around online safety. As we all know, the use of the internet and mobile phones is forever-growing and the problems that come along with this continue to grow within primary schools. More details will be provided after Christmas but a ‘date for the diary’ is the 12th February 2019. At 2pm, Lorna will present to parents the current challenges for children surrounding online safety, what the risks are and how you as parents can help and protect your children. We hope that you can make it. More details to follow.

On Wednesday morning, the children who play recorders and brass instruments with Mrs Fox showed their talents off in an assembly to the children and parents. They played a selection of Christmas favourites and wowed us all with how well they play together, and the amount of effort that has gone into learning new songs for their performances. We were very proud of them.

In addition, more musical talent was shared with me from Mrs Fox on Thursday as she emailed me with the results from the children’s exams and Selston music festival. This is what she had to say:

    Hi.

What a fantastic musical start to the school year.

Katherine has passed grade 3 piano with distinction and grade 3 theory with merit.

Zara has passed grade 1 recorder with distinction and Amelia grade 1 recorder with merit.

Joshua, Jessica and Hannah have all passed Ilkeston Brass challenge 2 on their cornets.

All my pupils entered Selston Music Festival and won medals for their performances.

Katherine came 2nd in the film class on the treble recorder, Jessica came 2nd and Ruby came 3rd on descant recorder in the grade 1 to 3 class.

Jessica and Hannah have also received their Blue Peter music badge and to top the term off the musicians put on a fantastic assembly as always 😊

I am very proud of all their hard work. Credit also goes to the whole team: Katherine, Jessica, Ruby, Charlie-May, Hannah, Amber, Amelia, Zara Barrowcliffe, Joshua, Lily,  Sienna, Noah, Sebastian, Grace, and Daniel.

    Kind regards

    Debra Fox

This week, we have also had Parents’ evening so you have now received your child’s autumn term report and had chance to meet with teachers to discuss current learning, progress and work completed this half term. It was lovely to meet so many of you and have those informal discussions around the book fair. I received so many positive comments – mainly around our new approach to nurture, the new curriculum of Greasley and homework. Thank so much.

On Thursday evening, Miss Marvin and I went along to the Greasley Christmas light switch on with a team of year 5 and 6 singers. We sung around the Christmas tree with the community and then led the way inside to sing a selection of songs and deliver poems and readings. I was very proud of the children as they raised the roof and very grateful to Miss Marvin for putting the Christmas celebration together during a very time at school. The children were fabulous and thank you to everyone who came to watch from the school community.

Finally, the week ended well for our reception children as they headed off on their first school trip. They ventured out to the Nuthall Methodist Church, where they experienced the Nuthall Tree Festival. They were very excited and I am told that they had a super time. They conducted themselves very well out in the community and we were very proud of them. They were very excited as they have now taken their learning beyond the school and into the community. Thank you to the staff and parent volunteers for arranging this opportunity and going along with them.

    What a great week.

Next week, we have the Christmas fair on Monday, the reception and Key Stage 1 Christmas concert Wednesday and Thursday and carols and coffee with the choir in the hall on Friday. What a busy but exciting time ahead.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Warm regards,
