    Week Ending 27th September 2019

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

James – Orange 2 – For creating a wonderful piece of homework all about the important things in his life. It must have taken a lot of time and effort – well done!

Ava – Orange 1 – For her fantastic effort during maths today. Ava independently compared numbers, using the <, > and = symbols accurately

Alfie and Lucas – Green 1 and 2 – For choosing to read books together whilst waiting for an adult to collect them for a lesson. The boys were engaged in the texts and even wanted to read with me. We sat in the entrance hall enjoying the storylines, pictures and vocabulary. They took it in turns to read their pages and asked each other great questions. This was a great opportunity for reading and the boys embraced the moment perfectly. I am very proud of them.

Theo – Violet 2 – For being very proactive and dealing with a difficult situation in a very confident and brave manner. He overcame his obstacle and was therefore very mature! I was very proud of you, Theo!

Emily – Yellow 2 – For Overcoming her obstacles by creating a beautiful mosaic based on our book ‘Belonging’.  This showed her views from the window, which was very tricky to do! A super piece of creative homework.

Susie Maltby – Yellow 2 - Amazing writing using adverbs, conjunctions, similes and super adjectives. A very interesting piece of descriptive writing and very mature use of vocabulary for the start of year 3.

Positive praise home is as follows:

Sid – Blue 2 – For being the first in the class to complete the red ‘Rainbow Readers’ bookworm. Sid has been engrossed in his reading since the start of term and already managed to read many many times at home. Well done, Sid, and enjoy further reading to complete the next bookworm.

Monday morning started with our annual harvest festival. We were all very grateful for the food packets, packages and produce for the Eastwood Foodbank. Reverend David, from the local church, joined us and he shared his appreciation with the children along with a reflective story about kindness and sharing. Thank you to everyone who donated – your generosity means a lot to us and the families of Eastwood needing support and your kindness.

On Monday evening, Miss Manson, Miss Marvin and I attended some continual professional development on the mastery of maths through the Maths Hub. The training was very interesting and we were very pleased to know that our philosophy behind the Mastery approach to maths is echoed by specialists. We are excited about the plans we have in place for our maths developments across school – including enable tables to develop independence, working walls to aid fluency and morning maths to reinforce arithmetic skills and the fundamentals.

Linking onto this, we have finalised our school improvement plan for this academic year this week and shared with governors. This year we have the following strategic key priorities:

Priority 1 - To develop and embed the Curriculum of Greasley ensuring it meets the needs of our school community and leads to a good quality of education for all pupils

Priority 2 - To develop a whole school approach to reading in order to improve outcomes for all pupils

Priority 3 - To develop high quality maths teaching based on a ‘Teaching for Mastery’ (TfM) approach to improve outcomes for all pupils

Priority 4 – To increase the consistency of teaching and learning across the school

This week, we have been reflecting on ‘Respect and Acceptance’ and what these behaviours look like across school. Children have been reminded about what ‘respect’ means in practice and the way in which we demonstrate this to everyone in school (whoever they may be) and the equipment around us. We have high expectations for behaviour and hope that you will join us in reinforcing the ‘Respect and Acceptance’ Rainbow Value at home and around the whole community. Thanks for your support in advance.

Today, we hosted our Macmillan Coffee event. We had so many donations and I can’t thank you all enough. The staff worked hard in the morning to set up the event and during the first slot (in the morning) we managed to raise almost £100. After school, the atmosphere was amazing in the hall and we had queues in all directions. Thank you so much for taking part in the raffle for the fancy bottle of fizz, buying teas and coffees and giving donations for cakes and treats. Thanks also for the contributions from the children throughout the day. We are yet to count all of the money collected and I will share this with you on Monday. I can, however, inform you that the winner of the raffle was the ‘Jukes’ family.

If anyone would still like to make a text donation of £5 (with 100% of the cost going to Macmillan) then you can text TEA TAR9 to 70550. This is such a worthy cause and I think we all know someone, who has been affected by cancer. Thanks so much in advice.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Warm regards,

    Michelle Bates

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Morgan – Orange 1 – For fantastic investigation skills to try and find out who was living on the field. Morgan also had a very mature attitude to his first ‘cold write’ and produced a great diary entry.

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to Red 2 for 99.3% attendance.

2nd place goes to Orange 2 for 99.1% attendance.

3rd place goes to yellow 1 and 2 for 98.9% attendance.

Another week has flown by already and once again the children are engaged in their learning and engrossed in their new topics. The curriculum, for each year group, is now centred on a big enquiry question that encourages children to ‘really’ think and discover. In addition, the answer is not ‘googlable’ and requires a series of lessons to find the answer. This is very exciting and already the questions are developing the children’s ‘Wonder and Curiosity’ and causing a high level of discussion and debate. The different year groups are tackling the following enquiry-based questions currently. How would you answer them? Maybe have discussions with your children about them at home.

Year 1 – How do past events influence our future?

Year 2 – Where is the past in the present?

Year 3 – Is change always positive?

Year 4 – Should we accept our place in society?

Year 5 – Are great leaders born or made?

Year 6 – Should the punishment always fit the crime?

In reception, our younger children are finding out about pirates – I wonder where they lived? Who was in charge? What they wore? And where they buried their treasure?

Linked to our history-based questions this term, the Hobgoblin Theatre Company came to school this week too… I heard noises, effects and laughter from the hall. I am told that the children thoroughly enjoyed the performances. I hope that the Hobgoblin performances brought aspects of history alive for the children and they all came home talking about their learning.

On Tuesday evening, Mrs Jamson and I hosted our curriculum and vision event for the third time since the start of the summer term. This was to explain the vision and values of the school, information about the new curriculum and the direction of the school for this academic year. We hope people have enjoyed the presentations and found the information useful. If anyone has any further questions to ask then please feel free to ask.

We hope that you are happy with the start of the academic year. We certainly are! We are always interested in your opinions so please feel free to give your views at https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/parent-view-results/survey/result/22861/10

    Have a great weekend everyone.

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Isaac, Paige and Miley – Indigo 2 – for being resilient in problem solving; working hard to solve the problem and being successful. Books also look fabulous and lots of work to show a great start to year 5.

Olivia – Yellow 1 – For her smart, detailed writing. Olivia used ideas from the image to write sentences including adjectives. What a great start to learning in year 2 books.

Roman – Orange 1 – for his fantastic positive attitude to learning. He independently completed a very tricky maths problem and was determined to succeed. He was able to discuss the different ways to represent numbers.

Che – Blue 2 – For his incredible effort, concentration and learning in rounding numbers.

Positive praise home is as follows:

Theo – year 2 – For a GREAT start to year 2! A super attitude to learning and a super smile so far in class. Keep this up, Theo

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to Orange 1, Orange 2 and Violet 1 for 100% attendance. Well done to all of those classes

Well, I cannot believe that that is the end of the first full week back already! I have visited all classes throughout the week and the children are really in full swing. Learning is productive and effective and new topics really are underway. Children are being respectful and are engaged with learning and this can only continue to get better as they further-settle into their new classes and routines.

On Monday, the Year one children learnt about how babies and toddlers grow up and develop into children. A number of parents came along with their own children and were available to answer the year ones questions. I was very impressed with the whole event and the children absolutely loved being around the little ones and their mums.

During the end of the summer term, Mrs Jamson and I hosted a curriculum and vision event. This was to explain the vision and values of the school, information about the new curriculum and the direction of the school for this academic year. We have decided to run the same presentation again for new parents and anyone that could not make the summer term session. We will run the session on Tuesday after school (17th) at 3.20pm-3.50pm in the hall if you are interested. Everyone is welcome.

Finally, I would just like to inform you that this term we will be doing our assessments slightly later. Assessments for the autumn term will take place in November to allow the children to settle into the year group and develop their knowledge of the curriculum first. We will then use the data from the assessments to write their informative autumn term report. Consequently, parents evening will be slightly later this year and will take place week commencing 2nd December 2019. In the meantime, if you have any questions then please speak to class teachers and of course we have open lines of communication through Class Dojo.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Warm regards,
