A super consistent week in school following assessment week. The teachers have been busy analysing assessment data and really thinking about what the children need next in their learning. In addition, the children are continuing to work hard and enjoying their topic work again.

This week, the foundation classes visited the butterfly house in Sheffield and enjoyed continuing their studies. On return to school, they talked to me about they saw, how the butterflies lived and what colours and wings they witnessed. I am told that they behaved well, were very curious and developed new learning.

Have a great weekend everyone and I look forward to next week…the final week of the term.

    Warm regards,

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Red 2 – Izzie and Ethan – for fantastic addition work. They worked together to problem solve how to make 13 and di a fabulous job on their white boards.

Orange 2 – Samardeep – For blowing Miss Schofield away with her fantastic diary writing as ‘Beegu’. She has really improved her writing by always using full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. It was also very impressive to watch her being able to self-correct her work through her checking time. What a great piece of diary writing…it even involved the Rainbow Value ‘Wonder and Curiosity’  within the quote, I am wondering where I am?”

Yellow 2 – Lucas – For completing a whole piece of writing independently for the first time. He wrote about a submarine with description and detail.

Positive praise home is as follows:

A HUGE well done to Amy, in Violet 2, who has been working exceptionally hard on Times Table Rockstars. She can now answer times table questions in less than a second and this morning she was awarded with a star trophy for her perseverance and determination. A true example of “Overcoming your obstacles – Being brave, showing resilience and challenging yourself”.

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to Orange 2 for 98.7% attendance.

2nd place goes to Green 1 for 98.1% attendance.

WOW, what a busy week. Everyone has been busy beavering away, taking part in their spring term assessments. Children have been ‘giving it their all’ and working flat out to show the progress they are making and what they have learnt through the curriculum and the different subjects. I am very proud of how hard the children are working and I look forward to analysing all of the data next week.

On Tuesday, we had great news from Mr Leyshon. He took a team of year 4 children along to an athletics competition against 10 other schools and … we WON! I am so proud of the team and Mr Leyshon’s leadership of sport this year. This is great news for us as a school and for the children in general. The next round involves us being part of the county final…how exciting! This is what Mr Leyshon had to say about the event…

“20 Year 4 pupils took part in the Broxtowe Active Sports Sports Hall Athletics Event at Hall Park Academy against 10 other schools. We started the day with a mixture of running, jumping, balancing and throwing events in two rotations with all participants having a go at at least one event. Our selected field athletes took the starring role - performing extremely well! Then it was time for our runners to dominate the event in a mixture of obstacle relays, flat racing relays and paarlauf races. Except for two races, in which we just missed out on top spot - coming in second - we were victorious in every single race! It was a truly astonishing show of desire, passion and teamwork. They definitely did Team GB proud! We’re now through to the county finals to show what were made of on an even bigger stage... and we’ll definitely be ready for the challenge!”

A HUGE well done to everyone involved!

On a slightly different sporting matter, I wanted to inform you that Glenn Chambers (our sports coach) will be leaving the school as we break up for the Easter Holidays. He has been a valued member of the staff for over 8 years, but has now taken the decision to leave Greasley Beauvale Primary and spend more time with family. Glenn wanted to say a few words…

“It is with a sad heart that I will be leaving the school on the 3rd April 2019.

I have been at the school for 8 years and have really enjoyed the work I've been involved in. I have had the pleasure of working with some wonderful staff and children and I will miss the special moments, you get from teaching.

I will be representing the school when we play the football final, which is scheduled for the end of April early May.

It is my hope that the football club will continue and I'm sure Mr Leyshon will keep you informed on this matter.

Finally I would like to thank all the staff, parents and children for their support over the years and wish you all the best for the future.”

We wish Glenn lots of love and luck and all the very best for the future.

I am collecting parent and carer views about the school's current vision and Rainbow Values.

Rainbow Rewards was ‘different’ today with a sea of red noses looking at me. What a lovely assembly and many great accounts and rewards shared and celebrated.

Red nose day continued with a ‘joke-off’ and ‘selfies’ and the assembly in the afternoon was entertaining for everyone. Heidi from Blue 2 won the joke-off. The children were happy and having fun, whilst also considering the charity and what they support. £215.90 was raised today for Comic Relief so thank you very much. Thanks again to another member of staff, Miss Marvin, for arranging the day.

Class pages will be sharing photos from throughout the week, so take a look and read about what the children have been up to in individual classes.

Have a great weekend everyone and I look forward already to another super week next week.

  • Semi-Final Football Match-Greasley V Underwood

    Tue 12 Mar 2019

Greasley v Underwood cup semi-final.  Final score Greasley 3 Underwood 1 (2 goals from Alfie, 1 from William)

Greasley played against Underwood in the semi-final of the cup on Thursday 7th March.

The Underwood keeper had an excellent game and pulled off some brilliant saves throughout the match. However, half way through the first half, Alfie, who was causing the defence lots of problems, finally beat him with a goal to make it 1-0.

Ashton and Isaac, two of the younger players in the team, were playing well, but had to be replaced towards the end of the first half due to injuries.

The second half saw Alfie extend the lead to 2-0 with another good goal. The game was competitive and Underwood deservedly scored to make the score 2-1.

Greasley went on to score a 3rd when William scored the goal of the game. William moved forward from the back, beating a couple of players before smashing the ball into the net.

The whole team put in a great performance and I would like to give a special mention to the younger members of the team, Ashton, Isaac, Noah and Austin.

The final is due to be played at the end of April, date and time yet to be confirmed.

I would like to thank all of those who watched the match for their support.

  • Science Week has started…

Mon 11 Mar 2019 Mrs Bates

What a fantastic day the children had at GBPS today as part of the A-life healthy workshops. Children and teachers have been to me throughout the day, and after school, to tell me what a great experience they had had and how engaged the children were. Each session was well-equipped and well-tailored to the age range and interest of the children. Many children were excited to access the 7 day challenge after the sessions. A great day had by all and I saw some amazing work around having an active and healthy body and mind.

    Roll on tomorrow…

  • World Book Day news

Sun 10 Mar 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

What great news to hear that one of our children reached the papers this week. Sophia, aged 4, found herself in the Eastwood Advertiser in her World Book Day costume. Mum contacted me to share the good news and I am so glad that she did.

"I sent a picture of Sophia in to Eastwood and Kimberly advertiser as they wanted world book day pictures and they have published it. Sophia is flying the flag for Greasley Beauvale Primary School." Mrs Smith

Congratulations Sophia and thanks for getting in touch mum! What great news to read and share.

If ever your child has something to share outside of school, and you want to celebrate it on the school blog, then please get in touch. We all need to 'Nurture, develop and grow' our talents...and sometimes that happens outside of school.

Have a great weekend and stay safe and warm in the snow.

A very busy week in school this week…for the children and the staff.

This week, the year 5 children enjoyed their Taster Day at Hall Park Academy, which helps to prepare  them for transition. They experienced secondary life for a day and I am told that they were very engaged in all of the sessions; computing being one of them. A great day for them and super to experience the next stage of their educational careers. Choosing a secondary school for your child is a HUGE challenge and responsibility and these transition days really can help to inform your decisions. Speak to your child about their views and start the planning now.

Thursday was of course World Book Day and what a fabulous day of reading enjoyment and engagement it was. It was fabulous to see so many adults in school reading with their children - thank you very much for coming. In addition, the children looked fabulous in their book character costumes of pyjamas - thanks again for support with this. Throughout the day, the children took part in book swaps (thanks for your donations) and the classes of varying ages joined together to read with each other. A lovely feeling across school yesterday and was a fabulous event. Thank you to Miss Brown and Mrs Jamson for organising the day for everyone.

Linked with reading, the whole staff left promptly on Thursday evening (yes, some in their PJs!) to attend a training event through the Flying High Teaching School Alliance on closing the vocabulary gap for our children. The whole event was around widening the children’s vocabulary usage and exposure and the importance of reading. If a child struggles to read, they will struggle to learn and they can find it difficult to make progress. We are developing our whole school approach to reading and we will be sharing some further knowledge and understanding with you over the coming months. In the meantime, I can’t stress enough to you the power and importance of reading at home with your child. Thanks for your support in advance.

Further networking we did this work was around writing moderation with other schools from the Equals Trust. The event was very useful as we shared writing for those children who are working towards the expected standard. All of our judgements were confirmed and then we discussed the barriers that such children can face and therefore, sometimes find it hard to meet the end of year expectations. As a group of schools, we talked about what needed to happen for some of our children to make further progress and of course we discussed first quality teaching, the power of reading and understanding vocabulary, the importance of spelling, interventions and how to engage children in the written world and encourage them to be emerged in literature.

We’ve had a great week and I look forward already to next week.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

What a great first week back and welcome everyone to spring term 2.

It’s been a busy week already, with some fabulous highlights. The first one being an invite for four children to attend a sports event in Birmingham. This is what Mr Leyshon had to say about the day:

“Our day was kicked off with a session designed to show children that high-level sport isn’t all about the athletes themselves. They looked at many different professions that support elite athletes in their pursuit of excellence and then a professional nutrionalist delved deeper into how different food groups are utilised differently for different sports.

Then, we had the star of the show - the session with a trained cycling instructor on the velodrome track! They were trained on how to stop and start without any brakes using race bikes with wheels that couldn’t even free wheel (you can’t stop pedalling and are locked in to the pedal with special footwear!). It was definitely daunting for them, but they absolutely LOVED it when they got going and started to move onto the curved and raised - also daunting - velodrome track! A few described this is as the best thing they’ve ever done with school that they could remember, ever, or even one, KJ, said it was the best day of his life!

We finished with a volleyball session with a strong leadership focus. Children were mixed to work with different school groups and not only had to learn the skills themselves, but also use the new skills to design a comprehensive warm up that would raise heart rates, loosen muscles and tune in the sport specific skills ready for a match. They delivered these warm ups to large groups of other children in their groups of four - which again was an extremely daunting, new experience for most - and then applied the new skills in some matches.

    A thoroughly enjoyable day!”

I have been entertained all day by some fabulous sounds coming from Year 4 in the hall. This week we have had a theatre company in school teaching the children a short musical play to perform for their parents at the end of the day. This has been linked to their topic of Ancient Greece. Some of the children have discovered new talents and very much enjoyed learning some great songs and dance routines. The children who are Greek Gods have very easily slipped into their roles!

I know the children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you Year 4 for brightening my day.

For me personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching some of the year 2 children this week as part of a reading group. The children were curious about language and ‘reading between the lines’ to answer questions in detail. They used their own life experiences to comprehend the text in full, and understand what the paragraphs were telling them. They were also really challenging themselves to use the very best vocabulary that they could.

I also had a personal highlight in EYFS yesterday. I bought them the story book ‘The Wonky Donkey’. Many people fell in love with this story, following an internet sensation, where a granny was filmed reading to her grandson. She laughed her way through the reading and the clip went viral. The book is currently a bestseller and hilarious when reading with children. I bought the book for early years and many begged me to go and read it to them! It was a highlight and I loved every minute of it!

    What a great job.

It’s been a busy week back at school and it has been great to see the children back safe, well, learning and happy. Have a great weekend everyone and I look forward already to another super week next week.

    Warm regards,
