  • Rainbow Quotes

Thu 14 Feb 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

After my 'Rainbow Quotes' assembly on Monday, Nancy (from Green 1) visited me today with her own copy of her researched Rainbow Quotes. One of my favourites is:

"When it rains, look for rainbows"

    I also like:

"You don't get rainbows without the rain"

  • Governor Involvement in 'Rainbow Week'...

Wed 13 Feb 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

Yesterday, one of our committed governors, Mr Richard wood, came to school to get involved with some of the Rainbow activities in EYFS. He was also invited into Year 3 to see the Stone Age workshop and he said the following:

"I attended the EYFS 'Rocking Rainbow' event this afternoon. It was extremely well attended with the parents/carers of around 35 children popping in. I took the opportunity to talk to over half of them and I'm pleased to report an overwhelming vote of confidence in the school and the EYs education provision on offer. All I can say is well done the EYs team, they are a credit to the school."

"I should also mention that whilst in school I took up the invitation of Ms Brown in Green 1 to pop in to see for myself how the children were applying their learning regarding stone age culture. It was living history in action as I witnessed arrows being made, corn being ground, furs being woven and jewellery created. The children were delighted to explain their activities to me and were rightly proud of their hand axes etc. that they had made at home as part of their homework project. Well done children and Ms Brown."

He even asked the parents about "What would be even better if..." and the main thing we need to work on as a school is the amount of information we send home and to establish a suitable level of communication from school to home.

Thank you so much to Richard Wood for getting involved with the school's Rainbow Week - very much appreciated!

  • Stone Age Workshop

Tue 12 Feb 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

On Tuesday, Year 3 had a brilliant day at the Stine age workshop developing 'Wonder and Curiosity'. this is what the teachers had to say about it:

Year 3 had a full day of learning around wonder and curiosity with a visiting archeologist. The morning was spent excavating, classifying and reconstructing artifacts. In the afternoon, the children created clay pots in a Stone Age style as well as using a grind stone to grind barley for flour, fashioning arrow heads from flint, nettle string and sticks and weaving using replica animal skins. The day answered lots of questions about the Stone Age and created many more to investigate next half term.

    Mrs Clarke

Our Stone Age workshop was great, packed full with hands on activities.
We began the day with an introduction to archaeology, and how we find out about history. Then the visitor took the children outside to explore how long ago the Stone Age actually was, and for how long it lasted. We did this using a tape measure, where 1m represented 1000 years. The children could then visualise actually how long ago this period in time was.

After this, we returned inside to be archaeologists, piecing together broken artefacts like pottery, to see what they were. We then practised telling a story through an artefact, and arranging photographs of artefacts on a timeline (layers under the ground) where the children realised that the deeper the object found, the older it must be, as they placed objects through world history from the Stone Age up until modern day.

With the visitor, we then had a go at excavating, discovering artefacts in sand, brushing them off and then classifying them by material and age (Stone/Bronze/Iron Age).

After lunch, we were able to go back in time to the Stone Age and have a go at some Stone Age jobs such as weaving, jewellery making, arrow making and grinding grain to make flower using a Stone grinder. We then made our own Stone Age pottery using the thumb or coil pot methods. The day finished with a Q and A session with a real archaeologist. Wow what a busy day!

    Miss Brown

What a super day. The year 3 children learnt such a lot and had a great learning experience.

What a super exciting week so far

  • School of Rock

Mon 11 Feb 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

It was very exciting on Monday as our year 5 children, staff and some parents went to see the 'School of Rock' performance at hall Park Academy.

Here is what Miss Thompson had to say:

This week, Year 5 had the opportunity to go and see a performance of School of Rock put on by the students of Hall Park Academy. It was great to see a few familiar faces in the show and the children (and adults!) thoroughly enjoyed watching. The children thought it was really funny and loved the story line of the teacher being a rock star! They also commented that they loved how confident the children were and how they did everything without any adults helping them e.g. scene changes, music, lighting etc.

    Emily Thompson

What a great opportunity and truly enjoyed by all. The children were also able to see how as children leave primary school that talents really can 'Nurture, develop and grow!' if you 'Believe in yourself!'

  • Positive Praise Home

Fri 08 Feb 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

What an afternoon of positive praise...

Morgan, George, Seren, Skylar and Ethan visited me from Red 1 to show me their amazing writing. Full sentences, adjectives, full stops and capital letters from EYFs was truly magical to see and read. I was very impressed. I found out about sharks, seahorses and fishes in the ocean. I even learnt that daddy seahorses carry the babies and give birth! I never knew that until today!

Jack, from Blue 1, has amazed me this week. He has increased his attitude to learning and behaviour and has been determined this week to 'overcome his obstacles', 'believe in himself' and be 'respectful and accepting'.

I have had a truly wonderful afternoon receving lots of good news and seeing children at their very best. I am a very happy head Teacher as I type!

    Have a great weekend, everyone

    Week Ending 8th February 2019

A great week in school this week. Many different things happening and children and teachers working hard and keeping busy.

Mr Leyshon’s week was a little different this week as he took his class along to the Links project. This involves our school linking with other schools in different communities. His class met up with another class from Rylands (Beeston) at Newstead Abbey. Here is an account from Mr Leyshon about the day:

“Our trip involved a design and technology project with amalgamated groups from the two classes in the morning. Using sticks and tape they had to create a 3D structure to base a lantern style creation on. Then, they used glue and tissue paper to create the walls/outside and put a fake candle in for the lighting effects. This was a super activity for their communication, cooperation and leadership skills as they all took on different roles with children they barely knew. A lot of independence was developed as they had to work out a lot of the task by trial and error and sharing what worked well with their group.

The afternoon was based around a book called Beegu with a drama activity in which children in mixed school groups had to role play an alien landing on earth. They explored his emotions and also played the role of helpful children that introduced him to some of our local area’s standout features. Children had to focus on what made their local environment unique and appreciate what it offers to their community – this was a challenge for some, and required some guidance, but everyone persevered and made some good discussions!”

(Mr Leyshon, Year 4, Blue 2)

Year 1 opened their doors this week also for their parental event. This is what they experienced and focussed on:

“Year 1 invited parents into the classroom, to get creative, as part of their Carnival topic this week. The parents helped the children make carnival masks, using many different art materials. They were fantastic; full of colour, sparkle and artistic flair. It was lovely to see the children's personalities reflected in their work! Thank you to the many parents who came, and for joining in with bags of enthusiasm!”

    (Year 1 Team)

We are linking much more with schools within the local community and beyond currently. We have some exciting plans with the local schools for the summer for a ‘Big Sing’ event (details to follow) and looking also into ways in which we can support some of our children with special needs, across the family of schools, by employing a 'Primary Family SENCO'. We are also linking with other Nottinghamshire schools to share good practice and moderate judgements. It’s a busy and exciting time and the school is on a journey to be more outward facing and make sustained improvements for the benefit of the children.

Safer Internet Day was on the 5th February!

Safer Internet Day 2019 was celebrated globally with the theme: Together for a better internet.

This Safer Internet Day was bigger than ever! With more than 2,100 organisations and schools across the UK getting involved to help inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

Have a great weekend everyone and I look forward already to another super week next week. Remember it is Rainbow Week and on Friday 15th February, we are having a Rainbow-themed day! The children are allowed to wear non-uniform with a plain t.shirt (of one of the colours of the rainbow), along with rainbow coloured accessories. Be creative and let’s have a great day celebrating our new vision and values. A reminder:

  • RAINBOW WEEK

Mon 04 Feb 2019 Mrs Michelle Bates

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Next week, we are having a 'Rainbow Week', where we will be concentrating on our Rainbow Values across the curriculum.

On Friday 15th February, we will be showcasing our work across school through display work and an assembly for the children on all 7 values. Therefore, we are inviting the children to wear a plain red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or violet T.shirt and any other clothing or accessories that may be 'rainbow themed'. Please note, your child does not have to wear the colour of their year group...any bright colours will be great.

We are looking forward to a bright and colourful week, which really concentrates on our new Rainbow Values:

Respect and acceptance – “Everyone is equal, everyone is unique”

Active body and active mind – “Take ownership over your health and well-being”

Inclusive yet individual – “Embrace diversity and be proud of who you are”

Nurture, develop and grow – “Persevere and take risks with your talents and potential”

Believe in yourself – “Be confident in your choices”

Overcome your obstacles – “Be brave, show resilience and challenge yourself”

Wonder and curiosity – “Ask questions and seek answers”

At Greasley Beauvale Primary School, follow the Rainbow Values to

    “Paint Your Own Rainbow”

Please do not feel under pressure to buy anything new. Anything bright and colourful will be just fine and fit in perfectly!

Thanks in advance for your support

    Warm regards

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Matthew – Green 2 – For using his wonder and curiosity in the Y3 Stone Age lessons. This enabled him to use his learning to produce a knowledgeable Stone Age menu. Super handwriting too. Well done, Matthew.

Morgan – Red 1 – For amazing application of his phonics skills. He independently worked out the words and then thought of his own sentences to write accurately. Keep this up, Morgan.

Jude – Green 2 – Such an Active Mind! Reading regularly at home and working super hard on Lexia in school. Keep up the super focus – you are making great progress, Jude!

Daisy – Green 2 – Fantastic focus and effort in maths, leading to her ‘overcoming her obstacles’. She is now a maths whizz with short multiplication. Accurate and well-presented! Super work, Daisy.

Positive praise communication between home and school is as follows:

Morgan – Violet 1 – Has sent me a letter to inform me that he is going to be taking part in the ‘Notts Gang Show’ at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham between the 4th – 9th of March. I am so very proud of Morgan and his developed confidence. What an achievement and I cannot wait to hear all about it.

A truly busy week with Team GB. We were all hard at work and many exciting things happening in all year groups. Classroom observations continued and once again I am seeing much positivity from the learning and children.

A reminder that parents’ evening has been changed to next half term (please see Parentmail message).

A discussion took place this week from Barbara and Donna from the Greasley Hub (PTA), and we discussed the team potentially needing to grow and develop. If any parents would like to join the Hub to help raise money for school fund then please do let one of us know or contact office@greasley.notts.sch.uk.

Have a great weekend everyone, and I look forward already to another super week next week.
