  • Further World Book Day update

Sun 08 Mar 2020 Mrs Bates

It came to my attention on Friday that Sophia in year 1 dressed as ‘CHEWIE’ on World Book Day and brought in great reading material to school. A book with a difference, and a very special link to Chewie and Sophia herself.

The book Sophia bought into school was in fact a comic. It was created by the East Midlands Garrisons, who are all volunteers. They all have a love for Star Wars and in their own time dress up as the characters to raise money for Pasic, a children’s cancer charity (Parents Association for Seriously Ill Children).

East Midlands Garrison are a group of like-minded, huge-hearted people who enjoy making adults and children smile when raising money for charity. We are very proud to have found out that Sophia is part of the Garrison family and she was in the comic she brought to school!

On Monday, in Reception and Key Stage 1 Rainbow Rewards, we will be sharing her comic and giving huge thanks to the work that Sophia does with the Garrison family, whilst raising money for Pasic.

Amazing work, Sophia! Well done and we can’t wait to see you tomorrow morning. I really feel that your work fits our 'Nurture, Develop and Grow' Rainbow Value - thank you for your work in the Nottinghamshire community.

    Have a great day everyone.

    Warm regards,

  • WORLD BOOK DAY UPDATE

Fri 06 Mar 2020 Mrs Bates

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Just to let you all know that World Book Day yesterday raised a fantastic £235.40! We plan to spend this money on new books for school and we can't wait to make the purchases.

Thanks once again for all of your support - we very much appreciate it!

    Warm regards,

    Week Ending 6th March 2020

This week, the following children have received a Head Teacher’s Award:

Scarlett – Indigo 2 – For writing and decorating a fabulous poem detailing the emotions and fear of an orangutang in the rainforest

Current attendance results are as follows:

1st place goes to yellow 1 and Indigo 2 for 100% attendance.

2nd place goes to Blue 2 for 99.7% attendance.

A shorter blog this week as I have detailed news and events throughout the week. However, I just wanted to reiterate once again what a huge success World Book Day was. I also continue to be very proud of Susie in year 2, who is now our very own author. As mentioned earlier on in the week, her illustrated and published book is currently being sold on Amazon.

The last thing to tell you is that year 3 had a super Monday morning this week during their ‘Earthquakes and Volcanoes’ workshop. This is what Mr Leyshon had to say about it:

The volcano workshop centred on various drama techniques the children learnt to show their understanding of earthquakes, volcanos and a targeted activity on Pompeii in particular. Throughout the day, they told mythical stories through repeated freeze framing, used their bodies to visually answer quiz questions, sculpted each other with imaginary string and much more! They were all left with a greater understanding of many drama techniques and how they can be used to show emotion and understanding, and they also learnt some new facts about volcanos and earthquakes along the way.

We hope that you too have had a super week and you enjoyed reading books with your children at home last night. Remember that the children are working towards their Rainbow Readers badges and every time they read with an adult, and have this recorded in their reading diary, they are one step closer to another badge through the Rainbow.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Warm regards,

    WORLD BOOK DAY!

WOW...what a truly brilliant day. The children were given the choice of coming to school today dressed as a book character or wearing their favourite bedtime reading PJs. Everyone looked brilliant and I was so impressed in the imagination with some of the costumes and the home-made props also. I chose the PJ option and had a very comfy day. What a wonderful change!

The day started with community spirit as the doors were opened up for our adults to come and read with the children. We had an array of family members and the walls were bursting with so many visitors. Thank you so much to everyone who came to school to support the children in their reading books.

During the day, we also had book-related activities in classes and Mr Leyshon read some of his favourites to the children in assembly.

One of my favourite parts of the day was the whole school book swap. During the morning, the children brought in a book that they had read and loved in the hope to exchange it for another exciting book. During the afternoon, the books were put out in the hall and the classes had a timetabled slot to come and make their exchanges. The books on offer were fabulous and some looked untouched and very much pre-loved! Thanks for all of the donations and making today possible! The children loved their new choices and spent valued time making their careful choices.

Today is ultimately about promoting the love of reading and that's exactly what happened today! The children were engrossed in their stories and activities, and loved the swap and the dressing up. They engaged in their reading and the associated activities ... and smiled all day.

Today also followed a fantastic visit yesterday from the author 'Eamonn Reilly', who carried out a whole school assembly . The children were engrossed in his stories and his re-telling of them. He had the children in the palm of his hands and the children were very enthusiastic about buying his books and having copies of their very own. Eamonn has sent a letter home about how to purchase his novels in school, and I really hope that these are enjoyed upon purchase.

Thanks to the whole reading community for making today such a pleasure. The love of books, and pleasure for reading, really was very high today. We hope to do more book swaps in the future, increase the number of year groups having 'book and buttie' mornings and even hope to start paired reading across year groups within school. We might even have a book swap area in school for the adults!

Enjoy reading books with your children tonight... let's keep that love of reading going!

    Thanks again,

  • Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

Tue 03 Mar 2020 Mrs Michelle Bates

    Dear Parents and Carers,

As year 4 will be aware, they will be taking the statutory multiplication tables check (MTC) for the first time, in June this year.

The purpose of the check is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help school to identify pupils who may need additional support.

The Standards and Testing Agency has released guidance and information today for parents. We hope that you find the following information/link useful:

  • Our very own author!

Mon 02 Mar 2020 Mrs Bates

Today, in the reception and Key Stage 1 Rainbow Rewards,  I shared that we have our very own author at Greasley Beauvale Primary School.

Susie, in year 2, has written her own story and her sister has illustrated and published the book as part of her degree! We are all very proud of her and the children loved hearing the story in assembly today. I bought my own copy...I thought you might like to take a look!

Well done, Susie! A great achievement.

    Thanks for sharing with us.
