Subject Offer

Intent

At Greasley Beauvale Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. Our aim is to provide progressive learning that builds year on year, in line with our to meet the needs of our children.

It helps them to develop communication skills, including speaking, listening, reading and writing helping to extend their knowledge of how language works; skills that they will be able access in the future. Children will be able to speak to convey fatcs, ideas and feelings with accurate pronunciation and intonation.

It stimulates children's creativity as they enjoy taking part in singing, reciting rhymes and poems, and responding to stories. They create different scenarios through role-play, imitating accurate intonation and pronunciation. They present their learning in a variety of ways, playing games, taking turns, adopting the role of the teacher and experimenting creatively with language.

It enables children to appreciate the beauty of another culture and broaden their horizons, giving a new perspective on the world in which we live. Language also lies at the heart of ideas about individual identity and community. Learning another language can help shape children's ideas in this critical area as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language.

It provides them with life-long language learning skills which can be transferred to other languages that may be encountered later in life. Our chosen language in school is French which provides links with our Secondary feeder schools, hopefully allowing the children continuity of their language learning. Increased capability in the use of MFL promotes initiative, confidence and independent learning and encourages diversity within society.

Implement

Key skills and knowledge are taught and revisited within each year and across year groups. The cyclical nature of language learning means that core vocabulary and structures are revisited and built upon throughout Key Stage 2, to better prepare our learners for studying a foreign language at secondary school. Our thinking schools approach is vital for this to effective work, as we think back and make connections in each lesson to broaden our understanding. Teachers in reception and KS1 are greatly encouraged to allocate time where possible in the curriculum to language learning activities. These children may take part in games, songs and activities to expose them to the language. Lesson planning can be based on the scheme of learning by Language Angels, of which we currently have whole school access to.

What our French learning will look like:

• Listening to spoken language and showing understanding by joining in and responding

• Asking and answering questions, expressing opinions and engaging in conversation

• Teaching and learning of basic French grammar and spelling patterns.

• Exploring patterns and sounds through songs, games, poems and rhymes.

• Using language that has been taught in role play situations.

• Writing phrases from memory, then adapting these to create sentences.

Impact

We measure the impact of our MFL offer through learning walks, pupil voice, governor involvement, book and planning scrutiny and curriculum reviews. We use assessment for learning strategies such as mini-quizzes to assess the progress children are making. The MFL leader formulates an action plan based on evidence gathered for improvement in their subject area.

Below is an outline of the impact we are looking for in our pupils in the curriculum area of MFL.

✓ Children enjoy language learning and are curious about languages.

✓ Children understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of sources.

✓ Children speak with increasing confidence and fluency, communicating through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

✓ Children can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

✓ Children discover and develop an appreciation patterns, sounds and writing in the language studied.

✓ Children develop intercultural understanding and tolerance for others.
