Intent
It is our intention that our PE curriculum is broad, rich and engaging, offering a variety of activities to enhance skills in physical education whilst also allowing our children to become physically literate. We strive to develop the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of our pupils, to ensure they leave primary school with a positive attitude towards PE and keeping active and healthy. At Greasley Beauvale, we understand physical education to be a vital part of a child’s educational development, and as a result we encourage positive and inclusive participation for all in physical education. We hope that this will enable our children to build self-esteem, team work skills, and positive values and attitudes in P.E. which can then be transferred across the curriculum. We aim to provide the bridge between our Rainbow Values and the National Curriculum. Additionally, we hope to spark a lifelong passion within our pupils for keeping active and healthy. We also encourage PE and sport as a means to enabling positive mental health and wellbeing.
Implementation
Our use of the Sports Premium money has increased participation in physical activity within our school and has ensured that this level of participation is sustainable. The details of exactly how we spend the money can be found on our school website on the Funding and Finance page.
Across school, we provide two hours of quality physical education a week. This provides the children with opportunities to learn and take part in a broad range of physical activity and sports while at Greasley Beauvale. These opportunities are for all and we have adapted resources to ensure that lessons are inclusive.
In order to instil a passion within our children for keeping active, we also offer a range of extra-curricular clubs throughout the school year whenever possible. These have proven to be popular with pupils and their parents. All our clubs are inclusive, and we often encourage children that do not have many other opportunities to be involved in physical activities or a sport. Some of our clubs are led by external sports coaches, who have been integral to the success of our extra-curricular sports clubs. These sports coaches also provide some PPA cover, and so help us to provide our pupils with consistent, high-quality lessons. As well as this, they also support us in our participation at inter-school competitions.
OPAL playtimes encourage positive and inclusive activity throughout every lunchtime with all ages being able to mix with the whole school. A wide variety of activities are on offer for all children.
We have an onsite swimming pool each summer. The intention for this is to be in Summer 2 each year. This provides longer and more regular swimming sessions for al KS2 children. The pool is also used after school to provide sessions for other groups of children too.
Greasley Beauvale are proud to be part of many competitive events, which motivate and inspire the children.
Our aim is to enable every child to experience playing a wide variety of sports during their time at Greasley Beauvale. We celebrate children’s achievements and exhibit skills in many ways including through sports days, dance performances, cross country events, football fixtures, and swimming galas.
In Key Stage one pupils are taught to:
• Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
• Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
• Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
In Key Stage two pupils are taught to:
• Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
• Play competitive games, varying tactics and modifying where appropriate.
• Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
• Perform dances using a range of movement patterns that show increasing clarity and fluency.
• Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
• Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
We provide all children swimming instruction in Key Stage Two. In particular, they are taught to:
• Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25 metres.
• Use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and backstroke)
• Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Impact
The impact of our PE offer is measured through our comprehensive monitoring cycle, which includes learning walks, governor involvement, pupil voice, planning scrutiny and curriculum intent reviews in addition to successes within the sporting calendar of events. Upon review, the subject team will agree and formulate an action plan for improvement.
Each year, we review the impact of the spending of the Sport Premium money and its sustainability which will then inform our next year’s spending and how PE can be improved further. We assess and track PE against Benchmark Standards in each phase.
