Intent
It is our intention that our Music curriculum offer ensures that all children receive a broad and rich learning experience through its delivery. We aim to encourage all children to listen and appraise live and recorded musical performances using age?appropriate musical vocabulary. Music is a language and one of the highest forms of creativity. Our aspiration is that every child adopts a lifelong love of music increasing their self-confidence, creativity, and imagination through developing their key skills, knowledge and vocabulary. These skills are developed during our curriculum delivery throughout each term. Opportunities to highlight talents through concerts and performances are guaranteed. Pupils have access to participate in the school choir in Upper Key Stage 2 and all children participate in a weekly singing assembly. There are opportunities to learn an instrument accessed through outside providers. We aim to invite professional musicians into school for the children to be inspired by.
Implement
At Greasley Beauvale the music curriculum is split into areas that are in each year groups skills document to show progression. Lessons are planned for using the progression mapping within each year group. Teachers can access Kapow online music resources to enhance their teaching if they wish to. Opportunities for cross curricular music are embedded in other subjects too. Both tuned and untuned percussion instruments are available for class music lessons to provide children with opportunities to compose and improvise on. During music lessons at Greasley Beauvale children work towards seeing, using and understanding musical notation.
We currently have a music specialist in school teaching for some classes as PPA cover.
Every year the children have opportunities to perform when the school presents performances to audiences. Children can perform in small groups and there are solo opportunities provided. Throughout these opportunities, children are encouraged to sing with confidence and control. EYFS and Year 1 perform close to Christmas at school and Year 5 and 6 sing at a local church. Year 3 and 4 perform at Easter, also at the church. At the end of the Summer Term, Year 2 present an end of Key Stage 2 and Year 6 present an end of year leaver’s performance. The school choir has opportunities to perform at local events within the community and they invite parents into school to hear them sing at various events during the school year.
