Spelling Test

Children will be tested weekly on a Friday on the spellings listed below.

If your child tests from a reduced spelling list, please learn the year 4 words and the first two/three of the spelling rule words (total 5 words).

Friday 13th February 2026 - words where the root word ends in y

happiness, beautiful, silliness, happily, nastiness, prettiest, merriment

quarter, regular, opposite

Friday 27th February 2026

No test due to half term. Please work on Year 4 statutory words (see below)

Friday 6th March 2026 - words ending in the suffix -cian

electrician, optician, mathematician, musician, beautician, dietician 

interest, difficult

Friday 13th March 2026 - adverbs of manner words ending in the suffix -ly

quickly, gently, reluctantly, furiously, generously, seriously, courteously, curiously

famous, various

Friday 20th March - Castleton

Friday 27th March 2026 - homophones. When learning these, it is important children know which one to use in which context. 

here/ hear, seen/ scene, heal/ heel, effect/affect, who's/whose 

 

Weekly Homework Activities

Weekly homework activities for children in Year 4 are:

-frequent and regular reading at home (we recommend at least 3 times per week) recorded in the home school diary by an adult

-regular practise of times tables. For January and February, we recommend playing on the Garage section of Times Tables Rockstars (TTRS) for at least 21 minutes per week and playing on Soundcheck 3 times per week

-practising spelling words taught in class the previous week

In our Friday Weduc post, we will be sharing with you the spellings we have been focusing on in class. The children will be tested on these spellings in their home school diary the following Friday. 

In the table below are the Year 4 National Curriculum statutory words. These will be taught alongside the Year 4 spelling rules.
