Spelling Test

Children will be tested weekly on a Friday on the spellings listed below.

If your child tests from a reduced spelling list, please learn the year 4 words and the first two/three of the spelling rule words (total 5 words).

Friday 17th April 2026  

No test due to half term. Please work on Year 4 statutory words (see below)

Friday 24th April 2026 - words containing sol and real

solve, reality, realistic, insoluble, real, solution, soluble, realisation

Statutory words: experiment, natural

Friday 1st May 2026 - words containing phon and sign

signal, microphone, phonics, telephone, sign, signature, megaphone, design

Statutory words: weight, length

Friday 8th May 2026 - words with prefixes super-, anti- and auto-

antiseptic, anticlockwise, autograph, automatic, autobiography, superstar, superhero, supermarket. 

Statutory words: minute, often

Friday 15th May 2026 - words containing the prefix bi- meaning two

bicycle, binoculars, bilingual, biplane, biannual, biceps 

Statutory words: busy, business 

Friday 22nd May 2026 - words that are plurals with possessive apostrophes

men's, babies', geese's, ladies', boys', girls', children's, mice's, women's, cats'

 

Weekly Homework Activities

Weekly homework activities for children in Year 4 are:

-frequent and regular reading at home (we recommend at least 3 times per week) recorded in the home school diary by an adult

-regular practise of times tables. For January and February, we recommend playing on the Garage section of Times Tables Rockstars (TTRS) for at least 21 minutes per week and playing on Soundcheck 3 times per week

-practising spelling words taught in class the previous week

In our Friday Weduc post, we will be sharing with you the spellings we have been focusing on in class. The children will be tested on these spellings in their home school diary the following Friday. 

In the table below are the Year 4 National Curriculum statutory words. These will be taught alongside the Year 4 spelling rules.
