Spring 2

English - We will be reading and exploring a range of exciting Greek myths, including; Theseus and the Minotaur and Pandora’s Box. The children will retell myths, explore characters and themes, plan and write their own original Greek myth, use ambitious vocabulary and descriptive language, practise using inverted commas to punctuate speech correctly, writing in paragraphs to write at length.

Reading - we will be focusing on the book,

Maths - we will continue to build confidence and fluency with number skills while developing our reasoning and problem-solving. Our key areas of focus will be fractions, mass and capacity.

Science - we will be learning about Animals, including Humans. The children will explore how our bodies and other animals’ bodies work, and how we stay healthy. We will be learning to: identify and group different types of animals (including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians), understand what animals and humans need to survive and stay healthy, learn about the right types of nutrition and why a balanced diet is important, explore how food gives us energy, investigate how skeletons and muscles help the body to move and understand how skeletons provide support and protection for our organs. The children will take part in practical investigations, discussions and hands-on activities to help them understand how their bodies work.

History - The children are very excited to be learning about the Ancient Greeks! The children will be learning about what life was like in Ancient Greek times and discovering how the Greeks have influenced the world we live in today. We will look in depth at; daily life in Ancient Greece, city-states such as Athens and Sparta, Greek achievements including democracy, the Olympics, theatre and medicine and how Ancient Greece has shaped modern life.

DT - we will be linking our learning to our Ancient Greece topic by designing and making our own Greek Olympic headbands. The children will be learning about textiles and fabric work and developing their practical sewing skills. We will be learning to: explore different types of fabrics and their uses, investigate which materials are strong, flexible and suitable for different purposes, design a simple product for a chosen user, measure, cut and join fabric safely, use basic sewing techniques including a running stitch and back stitch and evaluate our finished products and suggest improvements. This project will help children build confidence with designing, making and evaluating, while developing fine motor skills and creativity.
