Summer
English - In English, we will be exploring the beautiful picture book Flotsam by David Wiesner. This text is full of imaginative and intriguing illustrations which will inspire our writing. The children will be writing a retell of the story, creating a detailed setting description, developing their descriptive language and creativity.
Reading - we will be enjoying Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure by Alex T. Smith, building reading comprehension and discussion skills.
Maths - we will continue to build confidence and fluency with number skills while developing our reasoning and problem-solving. Our key areas of focus will be fractions, mass and capacity.
Science - In Science, we will be learning about forces and magnets. The children will compare how things move on different surfaces, learn that some forces require contact, while others (like magnetism) act at a distance, observe how magnets attract and repel.
DT - we will be linking our learning to our Ancient Greece topic by designing and making our own Greek Olympic headbands. The children will be learning about textiles and fabric work and developing their practical sewing skills. We will be learning to: explore different types of fabrics and their uses, investigate which materials are strong, flexible and suitable for different purposes, design a simple product for a chosen user, measure, cut and join fabric safely, use basic sewing techniques including a running stitch and back stitch and evaluate our finished products and suggest improvements. This project will help children build confidence with designing, making and evaluating, while developing fine motor skills and creativity.
