Autumn 1 – All About Me
This half term, our topic is ‘All About Me’. We will be learning about ourselves, our families, where we live and the people and places that are important to us.
Our Stories
Throughout the half term, we will enjoy a range of stories linked to our topic, including:
Who Are You?
The Magic Family
My Big Fantastic Family
We will use these stories to inspire lots of our learning and activities.
Learning Through Our Topic
Children will have lots of opportunities to explore who they are and develop their independence. We will be creating self-portraits and family collages, as well as developing important self-help skills such as choosing and preparing snacks, setting the table and tidying away.
We will also begin exploring maps and our local area, helping children to develop an understanding of where they live and the world around them.
Our Morning Learning
Phonics
We will enjoy singing familiar nursery rhymes, listening for rhyming words and developing our early reading and listening skills. Children will also follow their individual phonics programmes, working within Phase 2 or Phase 3 where appropriate.
English
Our English learning will be linked to our focus story each week, with daily learning objectives and activities designed to develop children's communication, language, reading and writing skills.
Maths
We will follow the White Rose Maths Reception programme, building children's mathematical understanding through practical and engaging activities. This half term we will focus on:
- Matching, sorting and comparing groups
- Comparing size, mass and capacity
- Exploring simple patterns
- Recognising numbers to 5
- Recognising and exploring 2D shapes
Developing Communication, Regulation and Independence
Alongside our curriculum learning, children will take part in a range of activities and targeted sessions to support their individual development. These may include Core Word sessions, RISE therapy sessions, interoception activities, Fun with Food, and Music and Movement.
These sessions help us to develop children's communication, sensory and emotional regulation, physical development and independence.
Our Afternoon Learning
During the afternoons, children will access a range of activities and interventions according to their individual needs. These may include the Interoception Curriculum, LEGO®-based therapy and Socially Speaking interventions.
Children will also access activities linked to their current year-group topics and learning, alongside carefully planned activities that address their individual targets and any identified gaps in learning.
Our aim is to provide a nurturing, engaging and individualised learning environment where every child is supported to develop their skills, confidence and independence.
