WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO THIS WEEK

Spring 2 / Week 4 / 18th March – 22nd March 2019

MATHS

We have been working on identifying shapes that have been divided thirds and quarters and using this knowledge to find 1/3 and ¼ of a number. We have also been looking at the properties of various 3D shapes.

ENGLISH

We read a bit more of George’s Marvellous Medicine and wrote a diary about when George gave the medicine to Grandma

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

We have been working on editing our work and using a dictionary to help us with our spelling.

PE

INDOOR (PE COACH) – games skills

INDOOR (CLASS TEACHERS) – no PE session this week.

HISTORY

We watched an ‘Magic Grandad’ episode and found about how Florence Nightingale improved the hospitals. We used this knowledge to write a diary entry.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

As part of our ‘Sensational Salads’ unit, we tasted various salads and decided on our favourite one.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO THIS WEEK

Spring 2 / Week 2 / 4th March – 8th March 2019

MATHS

This week we tried drawing 2D shapes on squared paper. We have had a lesson in which we practised our arithmetic skills and spent the end of week looking at what ½, 1/3 and ¼ means and using mental strategies to work out half of a number of objects.

ENGLISH

During reading, we have been working on our explanation skills (with a specific focus on using clues from the text when giving reasons for answers). We spent the end of the week looking at new vocabulary that we have come across when reading George’s Marvellous Medicine and then using these words in sentences to show that we know what they mean.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

During phonics sessions, we have been looking at words that end in –tion. During our English lessons, we have also been looking at adding –ed to verbs to change them into the past tense.

PE

INDOOR (PE COACH) – games skills

INDOOR (CLASS TEACHERS) – Zumba dance sessions

HISTORY

We have started looking at the role of Mary Seacole and how it was similar to that of Florence Nightingale.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Thank you to all the parents who popped in to read with the children on Thursday morning – the children loved it. During the day we did many reading related activities like designing new book covers, writing character descriptions, reading ‘Horrible Science’ books, having extra time in the class book corner, checking our knowledge of regular traditional stories and fairy tales and listening to some audio books.

Spring 2 / Week 1 / 25th February – 1st March 2019

MATHS

We have started our topic on shape. We have been naming and describing 2D shapes. We have also been working on identifying shapes that have been divided into equal and unequal parts and developing our understanding of what half means, by shading half of given shapes.

ENGLISH

We have read Chapter 1 and 2 of George’s Marvellous Medicine. We have used this to work on or ‘understanding vocabulary’ skills and to help us work on explaining our reasoning by referring to the text.

During the last 3 days of the week, we planned, wrote and edited a piece of independent writing that will be moderated with work from other Year 2 children around the country.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

We are having a very big push on spelling this half term so we have been working in using a spelling dictionary to help improve our spelling. During phonics sessions, we have been learning about the sound o being spelt with an a after a w or qu.

PE

INDOOR (PE COACH) – games  skills

INDOOR (CLASS TEACHERS) – Zumba dance sessions

HISTORY

We looked at who Florence Nightingale was and why we remember her.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

To start off our ‘Sensational Salads’ unit, we looked at which fruits and vegetables grow above and below the ground and the characteristics of each.

ECO SCHOOLS

We were really lucky and had a visitor come in to school and speak to us about the importance of recycling and we had a go at making piece of recycled paper.
