Autumn 1

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO

Autumn 1 / Week 1 / 6th - 8th September 2017

MATHS

To recap all the learning that we did in Year 1, we will be working in groups to solve mathematical problems.

ENGLISH

To link in with our work on cultural diversity, the whole school will be reading a book called 'The Colour of Home' and, in Year 2, we will be writing acrostic poems to compare Somalia and England.

Each afternoon, we will be reading 'The Lighthouse Keeper's' stories so that we are ready to start our new topic next week.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

We will be recapping using capital letters, spaces and full stops when writing sentences.

PSHE

Through role play scenarios, we will be looking at how we can be good friends and what we can do to make others feel welcome in our class.

Question of the Week - Is it important to set goals for ourselves?

PE

We will be checking that everyone has a PE kit in school and challenging ourselves to get changed in the shortest amount of time possible. As part of health and safety guidelines, we will be looking at how to be safe when doing PE in both the hall and the MUGA.

ART

We will be doing a lot of paint work this week. Painting a scene from 'The Colour of Home' and looking and colour mixing with warm and cool colours.

HANDWRITING

We will be focusing on writing as neatly as we can.

 

Autumn 1 / Week 2 / 11th - 15th September 2017

MATHS

Our focus area this week is 'number and place value'. We will be looking at how numbers are arranged on a 100 square and learning to count in multiples of 2, 5, 10 and 3.

ENGLISH

We have finished reading 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. This week we will be making some items for the display and writing labels and captions too. We will also be making inferences about how we think Hamish the cat feels and what he might be thinking.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

In preparation for next week's writing task, we will also be looking at spelling past tense words and writing in the past tense.

PSHE

What it means to live in a democratic society.

PE

Monday - Football dribbling skills

Friday - Gymnastics 9 key shapes and how to link them

SCIENCE

We will be identifying whether things are living, dead or have never lived and explore their differences.

GEOGRAPHY

Naming and locating the continents and oceans.

ICT

E-Safety - We will be looking at how to keep our personal information safe

HANDWRITING

We will be practising accurate letter formation and writing on the line.

 

Autumn 1 / Week 3 / 18th - 22rd September 2017

MATHS

This week we will continue to focus on 'number and place value'. We will be practising counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. We will be look at the effect of adding 10 to any number. We will look at how numbers are made (different combinations of tens and ones).

ENGLISH

We will be looking more closely at what Mrs Grinling does in the story and will end the week writing a diary entry from Mrs Grinling.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

In preparation for next week’s writing task, we will also be looking at using an apostrophe for contraction.

PSHE

This will be updated as soon as possible

PE

Monday - Football dribbling skills and relay games

Friday - Gymnastics 9 key shapes and how to link them

SCIENCE

We will be taking a closer look at what living things have in common.

GEOGRAPHY

We will be labelling and discussing the features of a harbour and making a map of a harbour.

ICT

E-Safety - Know where to go for help and support when we have concerns about material on the internet (using the Hector icon at school).

HANDWRITING

We will continue practising accurate letter formation and writing on the line. During phonics, we will try and join up some digraphs for the sound 'a'.

 

Autumn 1 / Week 4 / 25th – 29th September 2017

MATHS

We will be comparing and ordering numbers to at least 100, using the <, > and = symbols. Using a blank number line, we will identify and estimate where numbers should be placed. We will be writing numbers in digits and words.

ENGLISH

Now that we know the story of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch so well, we are going to complete a reading comprehension and focus our time looking at what makes a good sentence.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

Most lessons this week will focus around what makes a good question.

PSHE

To link with fundraising event for Macmillan, we will discussing what charity means to us and how we show empathy towards others.

PE

Monday - Football - ball control skills

Friday - Gymnastics - working as group to prepare a sequence incorporating linking some of the 9 shapes that we have learnt

SCIENCE

We will be looking at food chains and how they work.

GEOGRAPHY

Sorting the human and physical features of a coastal location

ICT

Programming – Play the A.L.E.X programming game

We will continue practising accurate letter formation and writing on the line. During phonics, we will try and join up some digraphs for the sound 'e'.

 

Autumn 1 / Week 5 / 2nd – 6th October 2017

MATHS

We will be learning strategies to recall number bonds to 20, 10 and 100. We will continue practising counting 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Those who can already count in these multiples will focus on counting backwards in these multiples.

ENGLISH

We’ve worked really well on looking at ways of making our writing more interesting. We are now going to focus on rewriting the whole story after plotting it on a story map and retelling it to the class.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

We spent a lot of time looking at nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs and how they make our sentences more interesting. This week, we are going to focus on applying these skills in an extended write.

PSHE

Or TEAM GB focus for this half term is ‘Tolerance’. This week, we are going to look at what it means to be tolerant.

PE

Monday - Football - ball control skills and aiming when kicking

Friday - Gymnastics - using our bodies to balance

SCIENCE

We will continue looking at food chains and how they work.

RE

We will be looking at why Christians celebrate Harvest and what it means to them.

ICT

Programming – Play the A.L.E.X programming game

HANDWRITING

We will continue practising accurate letter formation and writing on the line. During phonics, we will try and join up some digraphs for the sound 'i'.

 

Autumn 1 / Week 6 / 9th – 13th October 2017

MATHS

This week we will be focusing on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers both mentally and using informal methods such as drawing pictures and using apparatus.

ENGLISH

We will start the week by editing our Forest Keeper stories and then start planning and writing our own stories based on Mr and Mrs Grinling and their adventures.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

We will be focusing on identifying where we have used adjectives and adverbs in our writing and where we could use them in our future writing.

PSHE

Or TEAM GB focus for this half term is ‘Tolerance’. This week, we will continue discussing what it means to be tolerant and adding some work to our display.

PE

Monday - Football – passing the ball

Friday - Gymnastics – linking balances together

SCIENCE

We will look at living things and their habitats and how animals are suited to live in these habitats.

ART

We will be doing observational drawings of shells and then making shells out of salt dough.

ICT

Hardware use – taking digital photos and videos

HANDWRITING

We will continue practising accurate letter formation and writing on the line. During phonics, we will try and join up some digraphs for the sound 'o'.

 

Autumn 1 / Week 7 / 16th – 20th October 2017

MATHS

This week we will be continuing our focus on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers using mental methods to support future learning of formal written methods.

ENGLISH

We will start the week with a spelling test to see how many of the Year 2 common exception words we can spell. We will then be focusing on reciting sea themed poems.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION

We will be writing sentences with rhyming words.

PSHE

Or TEAM GB focus for this half term is ‘Tolerance’. This week, we will question whether or not everyone has the right to share their opinion.

PE

Monday - Football – mini football match

SCIENCE

We will be writing a fact file about an animal and how it is adapted to its habitat.

ART

We will be doing observational drawings of fish and then making fish out of clay.

ICT

Hardware use – taking digital photos and videos

HANDWRITING

We will continue practising accurate letter formation and writing on the line. During phonics, we will try and join up some digraphs for the sound 'u'.
